I remember reading this on Greg's recommendation. It was pretty good overall, just had lots of parts where the author felt it necessary to devote entire pages to decriptions of nature. But to get a glimpse of the life of a surf-bum its a pretty good read. Paints a much different picture than Spicoli...

Another weirdo brainbender from Erickson, naturally, set in Los Angeles, an excavation of identity and the film industry, and will drive you nuts with confused ecstacy.

As the second book in the Caster Chronicles, following Beautiful Creatures, one of my top 10 books of all time, I knew there could be some complications in the way I would view additions. Yet, J. K. Rowling could produce great extensions to her series, so I had hope. The title, "Beautiful Darkness" should have been my clue. This wasn't going to be a pretty, light experience. In fact, since I am so invested in this series, I had a very emotional time getting through this book and had to take significant breaks from reading it. However, it wasn't over the top, vulgar, or inappropriate. It was a traditional second part in a three-part arc. It is the time when all seems lost. For the first part of the book, the writing seems to be up to its usual good standards and the flow and plot are spot on for what the author intends. However, after the half-way point, it tends to slow down and get lost in the pain too much for me. This is also when a lot of the back-story of the series is explained. I can't say I can see a better way to do it, but there are two things that made it a problem for me in the second half. First, the humor was gone. I understand building the tension and feelings toward a larger emotional end. But having moments of levity and positive progress interspersed between the growing tension and mood is one of the things that makes a book great in my opinion. The first book used this method very well throughout the story. Second, true, unconditional love is a great and beautiful thing. But if it is one-sided, it becomes a sad and tragic thing. I loved how the main character seemed like he had limits to how far he was willing to be taken. Yet, in the end, it seemed like the authors were trying to channel an Edward of Twilight, an ideal, not a real person. This is contrary to the excellent job they did keeping both main characters real in the first book. There can't be that much darkness, that much emotional pain without some kind of outlet in anyone. A good example of this is the driving force for the female lead. She could only take so much darkness and emotional pain without an outlet. But somehow, they forgot about the lead male. Overall, it was a good book, but it wasn't the great, amazing book I was expecting after reading Beautiful Creatures.

I really liked this book. Remember When is like McNaught's novel Paradise without nearly as much bite - swap out Matt Farrell for Cole Harrison as the tough, cold, formerly poor business tycoon and Meredith Benedict for Diana Foster as the sweet, warm, debutante turned CEO. And I'm good with that. It's got the same theme of a one-year marriage of convenience (although this one is MUCH more delightful to see how it's "sold"), but in this one, the couple does not lose faith in one another. The obstacles they come across they face together, and it makes for a shorter, but sweeter story.

This is the cherry that tops the Ayn Rand sundae I've been consuming for the past 2 1/2 years. Capitalism really is an unknown ideal, and it's a shame that it was never given an honest chance to fully manifest. What we have now is nowhere near capitalism- we're on a downward slippery slope to socialism...which I'm dreading more with each passing law. She had it right all along. I find it amazing that someone could be so dead-on in predicting what the future would be like if we had kept going in the direction towards collectivism (which we have). She was Orwellian in her foresight about the political/social/economic/moral future of this country and the world.
I thought the First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant was better than the second, but this trilogy is amazing.

Am I becoming a curmudgeon? This book to me should have been about the dangers of an extremely loud and obnoxious child who gets a comeuppance when the crocodile/lion/snake eat her to quiet her down. I bought it for Swannanoa based on the reviews. Sad to say, I wish I hadn't.

This installment of the Landover series was better than I remembered it. I read it for the first time many years ago, but I enjoyed it far more this time. Willow and Strabo are just excellent characters, and the story, while a little formulaic like most of Brooks's tales, is still a fun ride. Once I've finished reading a couple of other titles, I'll move on to book 3 in this series.

A great, insightful book pointing out the things men do that are pretty dumb in regards to relationships with women! I really felt like my eyes were opened and I feel so much more enlightened and aware. Dr. Laura pulled out all the stops and just told it like it is.
