I enjoyed this book as much as all of his other books. I especially liked this one because it dealt with interesting historical mysteries.

I won a chat with the author for my book club for this book. It was a very slight book, and it was hard to find things to discuss with the author.

THE DEVIL’S HEART by LYNN RAYE HARRIS is about two wonderful and sympathetic lead characters who are both coming to terms with their difficult pasts--hers, a beating and a miscarriage due to a robbery at her store; his, as a kid growing up on the rough streets of Buenes Aires. The author gives us a hero and heroine that you can relate to and want to root for to get their well deserved happy ever after. Some things I really liked about this book were: The way the book started--with the heroine holding the hero at gunpoint! That’s different for a Harlequin Presents! Francesca’s loyalty to her friend Jacques A lovely epilogue! If you are looking for a deeper and darker Harlequin Presents with very well defined characters and lots of emotion I recommend THE DEVIL’S HEART. This is the first book I’ve read by LYNN RAYE HARRIS and I eagerly look forward to reading many more!

Imperium is another great book of historical fiction set in ancient Rome. I enjoyed it quite as much as the Conn Iggulden Caesar books, though they are quite different and even portray Caesar in a very different light. This book and series focus on Cicero and provide tremendous insight into the political works of the Roman state. Cicero is an interesting character and in this book we trace the early stages of his career. The mechanism of the book is interesting in itself. Cicero's slave and confidential secretary is the narrator. While a character himself, inventing shorthand and even engaging in a plot near the end of the story, his involvement in the plot is extremely minimal, being mostly in Cicero's shadow. This leads to a feel similar to a limited third person telling of a story, but with a much more personal touch as the character shares impressions and feelings. I look forward to the second book in the series.

Eh. That's my review. A good basic vegan cookbook but nothing terribly exciting and I grew tired of her "I grew up in NYC - when it was GRITTY! - and I'm so hip!" schtick. But it's hard to write a good cookbook and I'm not a great cook so....
