We start with a man landing in colonial Boston in search of the "Massachusetts Bay Institute of Technological Arts." He seeks an old friend, a Natural Philosopher, to arbitrate the final answer in the dispute over who has invented calculus... Newton or Leibnitz. The life and times of those distinguished scientists-to-be, and their friends and acquaintances in the Royal Society, is one thread of this complex book. The political and religious history of England, pre- and post-Civil War is another; the ongoing religious and political disagreements of France, England, the Netherlands, Spain, and German-speaking states is another; and the development of the modern economic system is yet another. All interwoven in 1000 pages of history and historical fiction woven so finely together I can't tell them apart most of the time. I read this when it first came out, 2 years ago. It took forever. This time it engaged, engrossed, and flew by... so don't be discouraged if it's too hard the first time through. It's part one of a trilogy (only 2000 pages to go!), and ends with an unexpected cliffhanger, so be prepared to plunge on in to book 2 of the Baroque Cycle, The Confusion, right away. As the English were wont to say, it's a ripping yarn! As the temporal sequel but vaguely logical prequel to Stephenson's Crytonomicon, it's a worthy successor to that can't-put-it-down masterpiece.

An interesting read with an unrealistic/unbelievable premise that I just couldn’t get past. It was just too farfetched for me to believe that Pro-lifers and Pro-choicers would come to the agreement that you couldn’t abort an unborn baby, but that it would be okay to “unwind” a child after they turned 13 but before they turned 18. Unwinding is a process where the body parts of the adolescent are harvested for the use of other humans; sometimes not even for medically necessary uses. Other than that, the book was well written, the characters were well developed, and the story moved along at a good pace. I think that teenage readers will like this story as it does have the feel of “youth against the establishment”, and there is an eerie quality to the characters trying to escape their unwinding by running from the “juvies” and trying to survive in a harsh world.

Irritou-me a relação do Mikael com a Rosa. O carácter libertino do Mikael irrita-me sobremaneira.

Witty, intelligent, and freakin' hilarious, Oscar Wao is something new in modern literature. I'm already looking forward to re-reading this book.
standard chuck palahniuk book. funny, vulgar, and full of funny quasi urban legends. great read. follows a sex-addict, who chokes on food at restaurants so people will save him and then feel responsible for him and send him money. he also works in a colonial town where they make everyone dress/act like its 1734 which results in plenty of humor. the main plot is driven by him taking care of his senile mother in a nursing home, and trying to deal with her dying, and only talking to him when she thinks he is someone else.

This book makes me wish I were a better eater, consumer, cook, caretaker of the planet...
It was just lovely and funny. Although the ending was a bit rushed I felt. Részletesebben: http://olvasonaplo.net/olvasonaplo/20...
