Dogen Zenjii is arguably the greatest Dharma teacher of all time. There have been few complete translations of his master work, the Shobogenzo, in English, and none of them have come close to conveying Dogen's luminous teaching and exhilarating prose - until now. This magnificent two-volume set is the result of more than 40 years of work by Kazuaki Tanahashi (read an interview with him here) in which he collaborated on the translations with a head-spinning array of some of the most important Zen masters and writers from America and Japan. Pieces of it have been published, in different versions, as books, but this final rendering is essential for any Zen practitioner, and recommended for contemplatives in any tradition, or no tradition at all. I've had this book for three months now, and have been avoiding reviewing it, because a book like this can't really be reviewed, any more than life, love, enlightenment and death can be reviewed. Beyond saying that Tanahashi has brought us both Dogen's enlightenment and his literary genius in English, I can only say that this is the greatest book on Zen ever published. Some will understandably balk at the price - but it's not particularly steep for two such beautifully-produced volumes, and, besides, this is the only book on Zen you'll ever need. Enough from me. Here's Dogen, via Tanahashi and Robert Aitken, in "Actualizing the Fundamental Point," entitled "Genjokoan" in Japanese: Enlightenment is like the moon reflected on the water. The moon does not get wet, nor is the water broken. Although its light is wide and great, the moon is reflected in a puddle even an inch wide. The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in dewdrops on the grass, or even in one drop of water. Enlightenment does not divide you, just as the moon does not break the water. You cannot hinder enlightenment, just as a drop of water does not crush the moon in the sky. The depth of the drop is the height of the moon. Each reflection, however long or short its duration, manifests the vastness of the dewdrop, and realizes the limitlessness of the moonlight in the sky.

Oh Gary Schmidt. Can I just tell you what a fabulous book that was?! Because it was. I have been reading an awful lot of young adult dystopian books these days and I get sucked into all of that pretty easily. And then I get my hands on your book and well, wow. What a breath of fresh air. Honestly, I just loved this book. I loved the narration. I loved the main character, Doug. I loved that Doug spent his Saturdays at the library. I loved that the librarian was a total stereotype of librarians - honestly, that makes me laugh everytime. I loved Lil. And most especially, I loved Mrs. Windemere. This books was just so rich. There was SO much in there. The book takes place during the 1960s when America was fully entrenched in the Vietnam War. Doug's oldest brother is off fighting in that war. Doug's father is an absolute d-bag. He is physically and verbally abusive to everyone in the family. He's a drunk and he can not hold down a job because he thinks he knows better than everyone else. Doug's other older brother Christopher is a bully and loves nothing more than to make Doug's life miserable. Doug's mother loves Doug to pieces but she too is caught in the father's cycle of abuse and has no way to protect her youngest from him. Doug's family is forced to move to upstate New York after his father loses his job. Here Doug gets a fresh start. It is here in Marysville, that he gets a shot at life. That is not to say that Doug does not encounter problems in Marysville, but at Marysville, Doug finally meets people who believe in him; who invest in him; who make him see that he can have a better life than what his circumstances say he can. Honestly, this was just amazing. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll smile. Thank you NetGalley for this amazing book.
