This book is creepy. I learned that if I am ever attacked by a psycho I should fight and try to get away. The girls that fought in this book survived. The girls that tried to reason with him or did what he said because they though he would let them go later were murdered. Jerry Brudos was one sick lunatic. Thank God he died in prison where he belonged.

despite an english teacher who tried to diminish the book into single sentence "gems," i fell in love.

This one is more short story style. Similar to Sedaris, not as hilarious, but still interesting.

This book allows children to see how poetry can tell a story. This book has a phrases that rhyme and teach kids how to incorporate that into their writing. It also shows how to write a mystery. You want your readers to have enough information to make guesses about it, but not so much that they no longer care about what they are reading.

Yet another Potter book. I think that this was a very good movie, but honestly, I'm less impressed with this book. In particular, I'm not a huge fan of the house elf controversy (which was thankfully excluded from the movie). I'm puzzled why very rich influential white people continue to create characters that speak in ebonics and play up to the horrible stereotype that African Americans still encounter. I suppose when you have Ms. Rowling write the house elf Winky as an Aunt Jemima character that LOVES slavery, than there is good reason that such a stereotype abounds. Disappointing to say the very least. Don't get me wrong, I still love Harry Potter and have a great deal of respect for Rowling.....it's just...as Ron would say, "Come off it!"

A great book by a great author. Kaplan covered the Balkans as a journalist and wrote down his thoughts during his travels in the region in the late 1980s. He writes about the political issues: "Since Croats are ethnically indistinguishable from Serbs -- they come from the same Slavic race, they speak the same language, their names are usually the same -- their identity rests on their Roman Catholicism. Therefore, the Croatian crowd symbol might be the Church or more specifically, the confused and embattled legacy of Archbishop Stepinac." p.16 Interspersed with personal impressions: "I felt an intensity of emotion, a fleshy intimacy, that seemed to be based on confinement and therefore could never be duplicated in the West. While extra-marital affairs in the West were mainly a result of middle-class boredom, here I felt they served deeper needs. With politics and public life so circumscribed, there was a huge well of authentic emotion that even the most ideal of marriages could never consume. And perhaps because you could never escape from the cold, even when indoors, a warm body at night was not enough: you needed one during the day too." p.199

I love this series. In this installment, Max Damage, the former supervillian is out on a mission with his new sidekick to locate the former girlfriend of the Plutonian.
