The original 19th century play on which the 2007 Tony winning musical is based
This was quite good, though I never would have picked it up if a co worker hadn't practically forced it on me. It was exciting throughout, but it drove me nuts to not know whether all of the architectural and historical details were true or not. I felt like somehow I was being deceived as I read it.
I loved loved loved the alternate history of this world: the horde, the bugs, the frenzies, the personal history of the main character. It was a completely excellent concept. With that said, I am just not a fan of books in the Romance Genre. Though the sex scenes in this were less "Flowery" than some, something I appreciated; but still I found it hard to keep from rolling my eyes. The hero determined he was going to make her his, forever, the first time he met her? Really?!?

I liked this book because it was a different setting than most of the other books I've read. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is also very interesting because there are so many literary elements used like foreshadowing, stories within the story, visualization, and irony. All of these elements come together to form a very captivating and fascinating novel.
Jim and Huck are fellow escapees, drifting down the Mississippi on a raft. Huck has to struggle with his conscience for helping a slave to escape, which is a reflection of attitudes of place and time, but basic, moral principles prevail, no doubt because of Huck's lack of proper civilization. Things really get exciting when Tom shows up towards the end of the adventure, and they all have to work very hard making Jim the perfect prisoner, and setting up the perfect escape. Luckily they all survive it, but only with considerable hardship.
It is impossible not to fall in love with this character! He's precious! I don't often read books with lead characters of his age (60's). It was a fun exploration of a person's later life. I really enjoyed it!

Great book, and a quick read. Stranger than some of his others, but there is a demon on the front cover, so I can't be too surprised!
Our book group read this; only one person didn't like it. The author does an impressive job of weaving together the story of the HeLa cells, the story of Henrietta Lacks the human being and all the stories of Henrietta's many family members.

This is one of my all time favorite books. Malcolm X discovers God a few steps at a time as he stands up for his people.
