Sometimes rambling, this is still a nice, intelligent portrait of small town mid-west America at the turn of the last century. The characters are vividly drawn, and Bellaman's commentary about human nature and the American character is certainly as valid today as when it was written. Maybe not the literary equivalent of The Magnificent Ambersons, Raintree County, Our Town,Winesburg, Ohio, or Old Home Town, but still worthy. I highly recommend.

This book is an incredibly important chronical of systematic genocide by Belgium's King Leopold II in the Congo. It quite literally gave me the most horrific nightmares I have ever had, but I believe that it is crucial for the world (particularly the Western world) to know that millions of people were killed while the rest of the world cashed in on their blood.

I just finished reading this book for the second time, and I have to say that it still ranks as one of the best books on writing I've ever read. The first half consists of King's memoirs, a portrait of a writer being formed, from his childhood all the way to young adulthood. The second half describes his take on how to write well, and the instructions there are quite good. King ascribes to a bold, in-your-face, minimalist style which in general works well for modern literature. The last chapter or so of the book describes his accident with a car in 2004 and his subsequent recovery to write again.

Mortal Obligation by author Nichole Chase, is an enjoyable young adult paranormal book. The story follows the plight of Ree and her friends coming to terms with their new found powers. Ree and the gang are an interesting and diverse group of characters. This is a good adventure with some twists that I didn't see coming. I thought it was a little bit slow in the begining, but it picks up and is worth the read. I'm looking forward to more of this story.

It's possible that my opinion of this book was not so great only because I had such high hopes after her near-perfect debut of short stories. Lahiri's talent in weaving tight yet perfectly detailed stories fell short in this novel, which at times wanders as if it isn't quite sure what it wants to do or even say. Addendum: OK, I read this review I wrote above a few weeks later and decided I was too harsh because I had just re-read "Interpreter" recently. The book is pretty good. Is it comparably strong as "Interpreter"? No way. But it is overall a solid interesting story (though it does sometimes wander, I still think that!).

I finished the book and all I want to do is read it again. Wow! What a great story. Makes me want to work on a story of my own. Once I finally got started, it's actually a fast read. Bod Owens leads the kind of life that just makes all sorts of ideas pop into the mind. His world is dark and creepy, but he's such a charming boy that you can't help but feel there is touch of comfort there, too. And I loved all the symbolism! I'd love to talk about this book with someone. My son is halfway through and I want him to finish it now. This is a copy from the library so I'm going out to buy my own copy on Friday. This is a book worth owning. (Payday!)
