I really wanted to enjoy "The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe". My anticipation was stoked by hearing Andrew O'Hagan on a panel at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto in October (2010). I've rarely encountered a more infectiously gregarious and unpretentiously erudite participant at a writers' event. Furthermore, I thought that the literary conceit of Marilyn's dog Maf as the book's narrator would be very clever. It was, for the first 150 pages or so. But, (and who am I to critique such a distinguished writer?) for me it didn't quite work. For one thing, there lacked consistency. Maf's precociousness (referencing ancient Roman history, kibitzing with other critters about German philosophers) seemed at times intuitive and at other times intentionally learned. A second problem (for me) was Maf's unreciprocated capacity to hear/understand not only what the humans around him spoke but also what they were thinking. I like the concept of an animal world that's more intelligent than the human world but I would have liked better a reciprocity in the relationships that allowed for more substantive affection and pathos. I will still recommend it highly as a worthwhile read. Just not as highly as some others on my list.

Mr Hoppy is an extremely shy old man who lives alone in his apartment. For years he has been secretly in love with his neighbour Mrs Silver. Mrs Silver, however, is head over heels in love with Alfie - her pet Tortoise. Mr Hoppy often leans over his balcony and talks to Mrs Silver but is far too shy to profess his true feelings. One day when Mr Hoppy and Mrs Silver were talking Mrs Silver told Mr Hoppy how she so wished that Alfie would grow a little faster. When Mr Hoppy realises how much Mrs Silver would love if Alfie grew something clicks with him and he comes up with a master plan. He claims that he can make tortoises grow bigger using a ‘magic spell’. This magic spell is nothing more than words spelt backwards such as Esio Trot (tortoise). Mr Hoppy tell Mrs Silver that this will only work if she hold Alfie up to her face and whisper the magic spell to him three times a day – morning, noon and night! Having convinced Mrs Silver to try this spell Mr Hoppy has a lot of work to do. He gets the telephone book and writes down the address of every pet-shop in the city. Mr Hoppy buys many tortoises of various sizes, none of which weight less than 13 ounces. He then goes to his old work place and constructs a special claw. With the help of this claw Mr Hoppy can reach down to Mrs Silver’s balcony and grab the tortoise and replace with a tortoise which is just slightly larger. As the size difference is slight Mrs Silver doesn’t notice that is until Alfie can no longer fit into his house. Mr Hoppy feeling very brave asks if he could pop down to Mrs Silver’s to hold Alfie. Mrs Silver begins to talk about enlarging the door of Alfie’s house. Mr Hoppy insists she is not to do that. He again comes up with a magic spell to make Alfie get slightly smaller – Esio Trot, Esio Trot, teg a tib rellams. The next day while Mrs Silver is at work Mr Hoppy with the help of the claw replaces Alfie with a slightly smaller tortoise. That evening Mr Hoppy hears Mrs Silver shout ‘just look at this!’ Again Mr Hoppy runs down to Mrs Silver’s apartment to see the wonders he has worked on Mrs Silver’s darling Alfie. Mr Hoppy finally gains enough courage and proposes to Mrs Silver – Mrs Silver accepts having expected he would propose for some time. The next afternoon Mr Hoppy returns all the tortoises to the pet shop and removes all traces of them from his apartment. The very last page in the book we learn of the faith of the original Alfie – he was bought by a girl called Roberta. Roberta has grown up and is married and has two children. She still has Alfie and he is a much-loved family pet. Roberta reckons that Alfie must be at least thirty years old now and he is finally twice the size he was when Mrs Silver had him. This book seems to have gotten a few bad reviews – This was yet another great Roald Dahl book – funny and witty. I couldn’t help but giggle while reading it. I can just imagine children being completely intrigued by this book.

Yakisha, I thoroughly enjoyed your book. It is truly and inspiration. I was able to relate to so many examples that you shared. At some point everyone is stuck between a rock and a hard place; however, they feel as if they are alone and no one understands. Your book serves as a great guide to help those in that position see that there is a silver lining. I recommend this book to everyone who desires to experience an awakening that only God can provide. ** spoiler alert ** Teenagers face many problem it’s a part of life. Friends come and go, peer pressured to do drugs and drink. In this book “Go Ask Alice the author/character faced many problems. This chilling realistic story is very descriptive and heart breaking. Alice thought all the things an average teenager goes through, but one day she goes to a party where her life turns all around. In the next few paragraphs I will describe the turning points, also the conflicts and problems she faced. Alice first encounter with drugs was at a friend’s party where a bunch of school friends were. Someone at the party slipped a drug called LSD in her soda. That night Alice did things age never did in her life, like having sex with a random boy. I believe this was a major turning point, which caused her to go down hill. From that point Alice was addicted. One of the other conflicts was getting bad grades in school and losing her friends. Her friends in school had started to turn on her because of her dug addiction and her personality started to change as well. With that everything else around her started crashing. She would fight with her parents, and always run away, most teenagers can relate to fighting with their parents but Alice handled it a lot differently. All was facing she had to do it alone. At one point she stopped doing drugs and was doing good. It wasn’t until the baby-sitting incident that everyone that she was nuts. This caused her to break down and runaway. Where she went from living in an apartment with friends to living on the streets. Like I said teenagers go through a lot of peer pressure and problems. Unlike most teenagers Alice had a really harsh life and had many problems like drugs. After finally trying to clean up she went back home where later her parents find her dead, if you want to know how read the book. I thought that this was a great book and to get more details you should actually read the full book about Alice’s life and adventure. BANNED BOOK OPINION!! Throughout the years certain books were banned from libraries and school. Books are banned for different reason. I believe that books shouldn’t be banned for multiple reasons. I will speak about those reason in the following paragraph, I will also give examples as well. Books are banned for a lot of reasons. Some reasons are understandable and some are just darn right outrageous. The main reasons books are band are for talking about witchery, race, violence, sex, drugs, religion, and the truth. Your probably asking, the truth? Yes, books been banned for the telling the truth about what happens like the book and Origin of Species. Other examples of that book that were banned were the Harry Potter books because it talks about witchery. Books like that you would never think were banned on the other hand books like Go Ask Alice was banned for violence, sex, and, drugs. Books like hat are understandable. Another book that was banned was Candide that was banned for disrespecting the catholic religion. I believe that books should not be banned. Reading books teach you whether it vocabulary or learning from the characters mistakes. Movies aren’t banned they are just rated for certain age groups. That’s why I believe that they should put an age rand on books instead of just banning them altogether. Like I said before books are banned for many reasons whether it is ridiculous or for a good cause. I believe books should be put in age groups like movies, G, PG, and R. If people like me who don’t like reading were only with dual boring books because they were banned there would be a large majority of people who wouldn’t read. For these reason I believe that books no matter what they are about should be banned
