this is a book about a gorilla that teaches people about social science terms like "reification" and "institution", without ever actually using them. also, if you read his other books you learn that he wants everyone to live in hippie communes and produce inferior, inefficient products. also, how does a gorilla get off being so condescending? there are only 300 of you guys left. if i were you i'd watch it.

Weird scifi. I think this was one of the writer's 'experimental' early books - the product of a fertile imagination.

When I finished this book, I felt such a sense of accomplishment. I gave it 5 stars, perhaps mostly for the good feeling it gave me to conquer this book. I loved the peace parts, and found most of the war boring. I guess that says more about me than the book though.

I have to be honest, the only reason I picked this book up was because the author, Jaimy Gordon, was going to be giving a lecture in town. I didn't care about small-stakes horse racing, and I'm always wary of award winners. As soon as I finished the second chapter, though, I was hooked, and the novel kept getting better from there. Gordon crafts a collection of excellent characters, from the young and naive Maggie, to the veteran Medicine Ed (whose dialect is pitch perfect and never difficult to read). The world of this particular horse track is well crafted, and the reader understands the poor racers and petty mobsters who run the place, almost like they'd always known them. The prose is beautiful and natural. Even descriptions of the most mundane actions read like poetry. Most importantly, though, by the end of the book I cared about the people, about the horses, and about an old dog named Elizabeth. While it's not uncommon for me to like people, and while I have a weak spot for dogs, I don't have any special affinity for horses, except the one created here in Gordon's novel.

Jennifer Cruise always writes books that are funny and romantic with a dog. I love the dog in this book. The way people describe the dog like it's depressed, haha. I can visiualize this. hahaha. So funny. I enjoy the book. But one part that I don't like, and I think it's so predicate (a guy who decided to do something what he THINK the female character wants, so lame and stupid. Because the female never say something about this and the male is so hyocrite, he likes his former job and never want to change his job until they are dating then BAM, he changed to please her, oh pleaseeeee!!! That's why I didn't give 5 stars for this).

Meh - it read like a movie script to me.
I did not like this book. This is the second Arthur Phillips book I have read and I didn't much care for either book. I will not read any more Arthur Phillips books. Life is too short to read dumb and pointless books.

Very good read. I related to the main character very much and the story was so good. Very engaging, loved the characters.

Three 12-year-olds attempt to outsmart the local organized crime boss. With extravagant police chases, vehicle theft and general pre-puberty buffonery, this novel is definitely for boys. It's humorous but entirely too far-fetched. This book is ridiculous beyond belief. And I don't appreciate the meshing of gun-violence, crime sprees and children's literature.
