I adored this book when I was younger and it was just as good and engrossing as I remembered. Young Prince Jen sets out on a journey to find the mythical kingdom of T'ien-kuo to learn how to make his own kingdom better. He brings with him an assortment of (at first useless) gifts for the foreign king. Within the first day, however, his path takes an unexpected twist and it turns out that the useless gifts are not as ordinary as they first appear. This is a bit different than what Alexander is known for, but I have a particular fondness in my heart for this book. He manages to carry the Prince on a remarkable journey that makes him wiser and a better ruler in the end. I HIGHLY recommend this.

I read the first book with a healthy level of shame, just knowing how popular it was with every high school girl on the planet. And the teen relationship angst was pretty annoying, but the book was addictive. By the time I got through the second book, I was less ashamed, and by the third and now fourth books, I was sold. I'm really into the characters, the lore / mythical backstories, the superpowers and resulting battle strategies. There are still some things that are formulaic, but I'm glad I stuck with it and I'm looking forward to the next book.
