Steve Martin writes Mirabelle very well as if he crawled into the mind of a 20-something insecure young woman who wishes to be noticed and made feel so special by someone who seems special. There is still the trademark Martin humor with Jeremy's clumsy transition to loser oaf to awkward, but boyfriend worthy hero. It's a fast, heart-breaking and romantic read.

In terms of immigrant/refugee stories, this was more my speed than The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, but it too failed to really grab me like I expected it to. I think part of that was due to what I felt was somewhat dispassionate narration, considering how filled with gut-wrenching situations this book is. I'm not sure if that's just Lisa See's writing style, or if it hinged on her choice of narrator. I think I'd like to read this book from May's point of view, "Something Borrowed/Blue"-style. Based on the cliffhanger ending, I'm holding out a ray of hope that that's what See has planned for this story.
