I realize the entire point of the American Presidents series is to give readers a pithy biography of each president, and after Ford died in December I wanted to read a straight bio on him given that he had popped up in several books I have read--yet I still didn't know much about his background. I quickly realized I could have gone to any number of Web sites to read up on him; this tiny hagiography is boring and makes Ford out not as the dullard that he was portrayed as president but a dullard who just wasn't very interesting. I thought Brinkley took a safe route in depicting Ford as a man who didn't want the job as president but took it anyway; Ford's decision to pardon Nixon is looked at in hindsight as a stroke of genius that saved the country further turmoil. These sentiments have all been issued many times before by critics on both the left and right, and thus the chapters covering the Ford presidency are boring. Better parts covered Ford's tenure in the House and his desire to be Speaker, his correspondence with Nixon before and after his presidency, and the chapter on Ford's life as a private citizen.

I liked how it was completely narrative, how coniving and cold the main character was. not a fabulous book but an interesting read and different one at that.
