Invited to be the writer-in-residence at Heathrow airport for a week, Alain de Botton composed this charming, flippant philosophical missive full of observations we've all made in airports but don't have the insight and eloquence to put on paper. It's a fast read (110+ pages with photographs) dense with pleasing anecdotes so it was all to easy to finish this in one sitting. But I will have to re-read it to fully appreciate all of de Botton's profound observations that go way beyond the airport and traveling, and into everyday life while still remaining (in the author's words) irresponsible, subjective and a bit peculiar.

I feel guilty for giving this book only three stars, when I did find it very poignant and beautiful. I will need to read it again to fully appreciate I think. Those who get the most from this book I feel have read it several times. It's definitely still on my to-read list.

This is a survey history of the United Kingdom's expansion from the British Isles into Africa, India, and beyond. It explores the economic motivations of the British, from outright piracy against the Spanish, to the schemes of the East India Company. The book does not hestitate to depict the brutality with which native populations were subjugated to the Crown authorities (there is a chapter called "White Plague"). It also tries to get into the Victorian's mindset and sense of mission to "improve" peoples of other cultural backgrounds. An interesting look at the Empire what was.

When I read Descartes' Discourse on Method, the translator said that he was influenced by the Stoics, citing both Epictetus and Seneca in endnotes. If you'd asked me what a Stoic was before reading this, I probably would have said, "stiff upper lip", or something of the sort, but that comes from our modern usage of the term, Stoic. I think I got a good feeling for Stoicism from this book, which is what I wanted, not to become an expert. I liked Dobbin's translation and notes, which made it very readable, and helped in understanding what Epictetus was saying. I usually prefer translations of ancient works which use terms appropriate for that time, but Dobbin uses contemporary terms and I found it helpful for my purposes. This book contains Epictetus' Enchiridion, his Discourses, and Fragments. Dobbin suggested reading the Enchiridion first, which I did, and it was more like aphorisms -- a Cliff Notes version of his ideas, IMO. The Discourses were far more informative, and while there seemed to be the same point being made over and over again after a while, at least the point was made within many different contexts. While Stoicism isn't my cup of tea, having too much fatalism and determinism in it, there were some familiar ideas in here which I value; there were also some words of wisdom, and a few resonances with Buddhist principles. I also found that some of what I admired about Descartes in some of his lifestyle choices while exporing his own philosophy were indeed reflections of Stoic philosophy, at least so far as I've garnered from this reading. Interesting and readable for anyone wanting to dip their toes into Stoicism.
