For some reason, couldn't find the version I had (though I did buy it in Taiwan, maybe that's why?). A good read, fast-paced and definitely detailed in the way that Tom Clancy displays in many of his texts. While somewhat like a 24 episode, still entertaining on a 15-hr flight.

At Home Anywhere, a collection of four short stories by Mary Hoffman, was the 2010 New Rivers Press Many Voices Project award winner. MVP judge, Leif Enger, surely saw the promise of Hoffman’s gritty and minimalistic style. Hoffman’s work also exemplifies a fascinating movement over the course of the collection. The stories progress in style and mood as you read on. “Flat Earth Society” starts off the collection with a pessimistic view of contemporary society, and the stories gain momentum (in both tone and character interaction) from there. In “Flat Earth Society” we meet Bill Roubideau, a middle-aged man applying for welfare in Coney Island. Readers learn of Roubideau’s past afflictions with cocaine, his dark sexual past, and his lives in both New Orleans, and New York. This is perhaps Hoffman’s rawest selection included in the collection, and it gives us a sense of understanding of what it is to start life over from the bottom. From this story on, Hoffman’s characters – all different – maneuver society and contemporary life in progressively better ways. Hoffman employs a close third person narration in each of these stories, which puts up a veil between the stories’ protagonists and the readers. “Flat Earth Society” is a thoroughly internal story with little character interaction, though the interactions that do occur are important markers in the plot. “Moths” offers much more character interaction, and allows the reader to have a better sense of Hoffman’s character motives. “Moths” is not a particularly standout story from the collection, but the dialogue is effective, and well chosen. This being said, Hoffman’s standout story is certainly the one that lends its title to the collection. “At Home Anywhere” is a story about reaching out to each other after the panic of 9/11. In this story, Douglas is enchanted with a Pakistani-owned market, and becomes a regular visitor of the store. After 9/11, he begins to worry about his connections to the store, though the owner approaches him to ask for a favor. This story is elegantly crafted and contains many lovely turns. Overall, At Home Anywhere is a collection of stories that get a reader thinking, and wanting to ponder life at every stage.

As a rule, George Orwell is one of my favorite authors. I love his style and writing technique, and I think this book is another great example of his literature. Not only was the story interesting and hard to put down, but he portrayed a somewhat realistic "what-if" situation. In the 1940s, when the book was being written, many people were being taunted with the idea that Hitler and Stalin's ideas could be intact all over the world for the rest of time and this book paints a clear picture of that idea. This book is another shining example of Orwell's literary talents.

Nova and Mal have grown up together – they are pretty much as close as it’s possible for two people to be. When Mal married Steph, who can’t have children, Nova agrees to be a surrogate for them, but when Steph changes her mind about the baby, several months into the pregnancy, Nova is left to deal with raising a child alone. Eight years later, her son Leo is in a coma. Goodnight, Beautiful deals with the kinds of effects such an even has on people, and how it forces them to come to terms with the consequences of their actions. For some reason, I always go into Koomson’s books expecting them to be uplifting – maybe because of their pretty pastel covers and the fact that they pretty much live in the chick lit section. Anyway, I did really like the book, much as it made me angry, and eventually made me cry. The writing was very thorough, and the fact that the story is told from several viewpoints, made the story much more emotionally hard-hitting. I really do love the fact that Dorothy Koomson always writes really strong, realistic women, and puts them in impossible situations. It’s the relationships they have, both their strength and their vulnerability, which make me eagerly anticipate every book she publishes. For me, the central characters in ‘Goodnight, Beautiful’ were Nova and Stephanie. Nova I loved, despite her confusion, and inability to act. Stephanie I should have hated, but couldn’t quite make myself, and I think that’s what the author intends, as it is through this character that she explores many of the core issues of the book.

I admit- this book holds a soft spot in my heart because in its time it pushed the medium in fascinating ways I've not seen since- Who else would dare to tell a retro-future, post-apocalypse gangster story incorporating James Joyce and the classic ballad of Finnegan's Wake and the novel of the same name, as well as Giambattista Vico's Scienza Nuova and divination? It's overlooked in favor of books like The Watchmen, but in my opinion, it should be one of the greats alongside The Dark Knight Returns, V for Vendetta and many others. Sadly, the current trade paperback format's paper loses much of the original's physical texture and I think it suffers for it, but it is still a story to read and process.

I love this book because it shows a little girl imagining all the jobs she'll have when she grows up. Some are quite funny. Children's imaginations are limitless!
