The most difficult and informative history class I took in college was centered on slavery in Latin America. I've always been interested in the history of South America, and even though much of the course material wouldn't really help me if I ever taught a standard high school history course, this book was pretty informative, although it's almost as old as I am.

Richard Foltz has written a very brief, but a very readable, very helpful introduction to a comparative study of the history of trade between Europe and Far-East Asia and the history of religion in Central Asia. In a mere 150 pages, he surveys a thousand years of history and seven religions: Judaism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Nestorian Christianity, Manichaeism, Shamanism, and Islam. Foltz puts forward a plausible theory to account for the relative successes and failures of those religions as each passed through, and some thrived in, the caravan cities of Central Asia. However, the book is far too brief to prove the theory, and does not take into account the work of René Girard, which by now should be essential reading for any study of religion. Even so, Foltz makes a compelling case for why every American should know something about Sogdiana.

"Chicken with Plums" is based on the true story of Satrapi's great-uncle, Nasser Ali, a famous Iranian musician, whose Tar is destroyed by his wife. After deciding that he has nothing else to live for he takes to his bed and waits to die. Eight days later he dies. In between Nasser's wife, brother, sister, and children all try to convince him to stay in the living world as he dreams of what the future might be. "Chickens with Plums" has the same great artwork of Persepolis that places the focus on the characters faces instead of the background, but the story is ultimately lacking. Satrapi appears to be trying to show us some of the universal themes of live, love, and everything in between and uses her great-uncle's story as a way to demonstrate that. But the story instead portrays her uncle as a shallow, vain man and its difficult to sympathize or relate to him in any way. I think I understand what Satrapi's is trying to say with this book, but it just doesn't work. In the meantime I'll treasure Persepolis and I'll wait for another book that shows off Satrapi's brilliance.

I love the wry humour and also the local interest. This is more a book of reminiscenses than a straightforward travel diary, and because of this I found I preferred to read it slowly and dip into it. I have spent a short holiday on a narrow boat and it introduces you to a parallel world where things move at walking pace. Maybe this is how the book should be read. Nevertheless it is delightful. Belgium, Holland and France drifted by - often closed! - but plenty of time to sample the local wines and meet the characters. As a dog owner I did enjoy the part in the narrative given over to Terry's dog.

From the first page to the final page this book was absolutely amazing. In it were many things I've never seen in a work of this kind before. The Vyrl, in my opinion, were a masterwork. A must read for fantasy lovers.
Very cute jr. high read. Vladmir Tod is a totally normal awkward jr. higher: he loves video games and hanging out with his best friend. Oh, and he drinks blood juice boxes at lunch every day. A totally functional undercover vampire who's more worried about the boys who bully him than he is about his "condition". The story is his quest to find his voice, get the girl (jr. high style), and find the "thing" that murdered his parents before it finds and destroys him too. Typical day in jr. high, right? It's cute, simple prose. A fun read for a reluctant boy reader. And it's a series, so you might get your kid hooked on reading! Gasp!

Thank you Beth! I loved this book. it was so real. jennifer Weiner's characters always feel as if they are my friends. I like how her writing has a voice that i am familiar with. Reading her books feels like hanging out with an old friend.

I was unsure as to how to place a "bad" review, but I was looking at this on my bookshelf and had to put in a word for this as the most overrated piece of literature ever.

This is very different that most of his autobiographical works, but I still loved it. It is an easy and humourous read. It still has that dark feeling, but it isn't written in the bitter first-person we have come to love and expect. I don't find this to be a fault; I liked the storyline.
