Pure force of will and a singular determination towards subject matter and tone. I can think of now better way to describe "American Psycho." The book is designed in every way to exemplify the excesses of 80's culture: it's laborious subjugation of the page to minutiae like business cards, entire chapters devoted to analyzing pop stars, the consistent and repetitive loss of identity and the relentlessly brutal violence without reason or remorse. One of my favorite books.

Yes, it's about love (not the healthy kind recommended for Valentine's Day, though). As confessional poetry, it's accessible and yet, not overwhelmingly self-involved. Can spark interesting discussions, or just enjoy listening to it.

Wished I could have given it less than 1 star. I didn't even finish it, that's how much I disliked it. I read a third of it and that was more than enough. Two of my biggest gripes: depressing, unlikable characters and the author's penchant for rambling. Meh. There are too many other (better) books out there for me to read so I don't need to attempt to plow through the crappy books...
