This book started out interesting, but became increasingly unnecessarily sexual. I would not recommend it to anyone. Writing is also awkward and seems like maybe the author didn't really know what she wanted to do with her voice.

I really liked how this was done from a 5 year old child's point of view. It was a quick read that was both optimistic and depressing at the same time.

A very good book. I was nervous, excited, worried about all of the charachters. My favorite part is when she finds out her favorite teacher is actually a very close relative. Such a shocker.

I thought it was going to be about her experience teaching English literature to a select group of Iranian young women...instead it was an autobiography of her experience as a woman teacher in Iran, loosel anchored by her young students.

2nd time around on this one. I just recently watched the movie and was curious how it compared w/ the book and since I read the book 3-4 yrs ago, I don't remember the details. I love this passage from pg 2 and will strive to remember it as I grow older: "Growing older became something he wanted desperately to accomplish, rather than merely a dreaded inevitability. How presumptuous they both had been never to consider growing old as an achievement and a challenge. Aging was something they'd both wanted so much to avoid." Definitely something to remember when dissecting all the flaws in the mirror due to aging. I loved it the second time around, too! There were lots of similarities between the book and the movie and I thought both were really well done. One thing that I liked in the movie better--shocking, I know--movies are never as good as the books--but I loved the story of how they met and they way the portrayed it in the movie. A wonderful difference. I didn't like so much, though, how disapproving they made her mother in the movie. An excellent book turned into an excellent movie!

This book paints an awfully grim picture of the US' role in Iraq. Seems like at every turn we made lots and lots and lots of mistakes, which I suppose I knew, but reading about it is just amazing. It solidified my opinions about the US occupation and how the war has been run. Quick read too, as the author's tone is fairly conversational.

Lenny doesn't have much sense, but he is strong. George is small but quick and smart. As friends, they take care of one another and together they travel from job to job. Lenny loves soft things, which has gotten the two in trouble in the past. At a new farm, there's a chance for them to raise enough money to finally live off "the fat of the land." This classic is filled with description and dialogue, at the end I only craved more Steinbeck.
