Since reading Term Limits last summer, I've re-discovered my love of thrillers, especially political thrillers. Sure, they can be sort of hackneyed (I couldn't tell you the difference between Vince Flynn's and Brad Thor's main characters, for example) but they are fun to read, and often times shine a light on contemporary issues facing the United States. Full Black is my second Brad Thor novel, and I enjoyed it. A thinly disguised George Soros-type figure plots to destroy America from within so that he can usher in a new era of utopian socialism. To do this, he funds and directs a network of radical Muslim terrorists, and attacks America on multiple, simultaneous fronts: airports, movie theaters, corporations, the electrical system, etc. Of course, the main character and his associates swing into action and stop the majority of the events, saving America from evil. Lots of gun fights, tense build ups to terrorist attacks, and "where is the bomb?" sorts of interrogations make this book a page-turner. Thor is a competent writer. What I find much more interesting about these sorts of books are the 'real world' issues the author highlights. From our inevitable clash with China to the sorts of vulnerabilities we have as a nation, Thor (and others like him) force their readers to reckon with the type of world we are living in: a dangerous one. Thor's politics are certainly conservative (to say the least!) and his political ideology colors his writing. There is a long exchange between the evil pseudo-Soros and a beautiful reporter for the Financial Times, for example, about the differences between socialism and capitalism. I'll leave it to you to imagine which system the author prefers. Likewise, the good guys in the book have absolutely no problem torturing people to get information, and Thor makes it clear that 'by any means necessary' is far more important than, say, the law. A fun book; a quick read; a pulse-pounder at parts, and some food for thought. If you like this sort of thing, you'll enjoy Full Black.

This book is beautifully written. You could randomly pick almost any paragraph and read it and close the book and think to your self "wow, that was beautiful." Of course it isn't a gripper or a page turner. It took me over a year to finish reading this book. That's not to say it's not good-- on the contrary I say it's a testament to how good it is that I ever finished it. How many times have you put a book down for months and then returned to pick it up where you left off? I can think of one other book I did that with, but I did it several times with Women in Love. It's slow, and in the beginning I couldn't really keep all the characters straight. But it's beautiful and it's hilarious! The langauge of the day, comsbined with the melodrama of Gudrun and Bragwen as they discuss the banal horror of spending the rest of their life with any of the men they know, is both charming and laugh-out-loud funny. The book works as a period piece; you can see the structured class system of the England of the day nad the sisters who simply don't fit in with anyone. The book also works as a philosophical piece; at times it reminds me of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. The chapters dedicated to the coal mines and the machine-like endeavors of the men who runs them must have inspired Ayn Rand's work. This book is deifnitly worth reading, but perhaps best along side another book (or 10).

I honestly would give this book 3.5 stars. The run on sentences and lack of puncuation really bothered me. I thought the storyline was an excellent idea and loved the book until I got to the rape scene. I hated everything about it. Not only was it vulgar, but also unrealistic. I don't doubt that in a situation such as was portrayed, that something like that could have come about. However, I don't buy for a second that the women would walk in there so willingly. I almost stopped reading at this point because it made me so mad, but I was so invested in the book when that scene hit, I had to finish to see how it all ended. Aside from that, I thought this book was very intriguing.

This book is a very poignant tale of love and making the most of time. It really made me think about the ways in which time exists, and I really like how it seemed that time was infinite, always happening, since Henry was able to travel back from the present into Clare's past. The list, which became the Mobius Strip between their lives, amazed me, and everytime I re-read this book (honestly, once every few months, my copy is falling to pieces), I'm more amazed at the author's ability to imagine time as malleable and strung out forever. It makes me cry every time. Every time I reach the part where they're poised on the top of the roller-coaster, I want to put it down and remember Clare and Henry always happy and in love. And I always read it to the end, because I can't stop, I'm too invested in the characters and their lives. I love Henry and Clare, and later Alba, Kimy and the rest of the characters, as though I've known them all my life. It breaks my heart, and gives me hope, and it's rare for a book to do that. 5 stars, most definitely read this book.

I've been enjoying this series. IT is light and fun while still being thoughtful and informative about African life. I enjoy the characters. It has been a nice easy distraction as of late.

Reread in Feb 2011, then again in Nov 14. Every time I feel like I get more out of these books. Anne and her Avonlea companions are so irresistible! This time around I'm listening to them on audiobook for the first time, and they're so great!

Not as juicy as the title alludes to, but nonetheless an interesting story of the history and sociology of the time.

Another great book that I really enjoyed. I'm a big fan of books set in the South during the early 1900's, and since I was born in Georgia, this was extra fun to read!

i'm unsatisfied with the ending, but this book, the third and last book, really put everything to perspective. it also gave an introduction to something new. although the ending was... unsatisfying... it lead you to thinking about the three books altogether, and the many obstacles faced out of the great adventure given to katniss. it's okay gale, you've got me. rest in peace finnick. peeta, sweetheart, take care of the fierce and fiery katniss.
