did you know that arthur miller was once married to marilyn monroe? did you know that he was a prominent player in fighting of mcarthyism and was once good friends with elia kazan, only to have that friendship destroyed by kazan dragging miller's name in during a congressional hearing? pretty incredible life that explains the origins of his ethos.

I bought this book because of the buzz it received not long ago regarding the banning of it. I enjoyed it, but was slightly disappointed with the ending. I also wish Melinda would have had a stronger voice throughout. I am curious to see what my teenage daughter thinks about it.

Didion is a rock star. In this book she captures the human struggle to wrap one's brain around the loss of a loved one, and chronicles the ironies embedded in the grieving process. Beautiful and thoughtful.

I don't usually give five star ratings but this really was a fantastic book. Well written, engaging and full of characters I loved. So glad I read this book.
3.5 stars
What a lovely little chapbook.

Well that was totally whackadoodle. I know that Sally Wentworth can write a good female taking revenge story (The Judas Kiss) but this one wasn't. The heroine was a total bitch and a foolish ninny. I have no idea why the hero loved her at all or why he forgave her in the end. The end was just too short and left me with my jaw dropped and a "no f***ing way" in my stunned little brain. Oh and for those who care, he does pretty much rape her at one point, cuz you know, she owes him. Although she was such a bitch to him that maybe he had a point. Just saying.

Wow. I am now in a 450sq foot home and I love it. We are all burdened with too much shit, you know? I mean, I understand having backyard and space and wanting room of ones own...but I learned a lot about peace and desire and the danger of life meditating and feeling self righteous. I have leant this book to numerous people and I would be happy to lend this book to YOU if you ask! It is damanged, inky, wet from readin the bath. Yup. IN the bath YO. I bought this book as a recommendation at Antigone Books in Tucson and the idea of serenity, rural isolation, avoiding government, having to face oneself. It is very contemplative, and at times very white REI dude, but trust me, it is worth it.

Don't be put off by the first chapter. The soiree given by Anna Pavlovna is hard to follow and filled with people you would never want to meet, but the rest of the book is surprisingly cinematic and compelling.
