This book was a little confusing to me in the beginning. That or maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. It wasn't until a few chapters in that I realized that the main character is autistic. I got into it really fast though and I love it. I love the way it reads and the way the story line is broken up by facts. Very very good book.

In 'Death in Venice', Thomas Mann allows his readers to view a respectable man's descent into madness, into a dark, disturbing obsession where reason and logic have no impact on actions - where passion reigns sovereign... and it's jarring to *witness*. The story begins with such attention taken to establish the story's protagonist (*Gus von A*) as hyper-disciplined, possessing the utmost aplomb and self-mastery - only to have him come undone as the book progresses. This is one of those stories where syntax and diction play as much a part in the reader's investment as does the plot itself. Mann's sentences are at first long, and intricate - with far too many dependent clauses (seriously, try to diagram some of these suckers!)... but by the story's end, peppered amongst the ornate are an equal number of staccato phrases (often the protagonist's hurried and ill-considered decisions to act on whim). I love the art of writing and Mann's style is the equivalent of literary porn. The subject matter isn't lacking scandal either. GREAT read. It's short enough to read quickly, but why rush. Savor it a bit.

August 20, 2011: I've been trying to find more books by Cordelia Strube ever since I read and was blown away by *Lemon*. Normally, I prefer to purchase my books new and for full price. I like to think that I am supporting the authors and the whole book industry by doing so. But so far, I've struck out. Nothing in the stores and nothing available to order - either "sold out" or "temporarily unavailable to order". I'm starting to have my suspicions about that "temporarily" bit. Today though, on my almost daily jaunt over to Aqua books, I decided to check & see whether I could find any used copies. Eureka! Not one but two! This is one of them. And bonus points to me for putting my money where my mouth is to go buy something at Aqua Books (my favourite used book store in Winnipeg and self-proclaimed cultural city hall, that, sadly, recently announced it was closing because they just couldn't financially make a go of it any more).

Such a fun series and a satisfying ending. I love books with talking animals--especially squirrels! :)

Another compilation of a serial novel by Smith, but not as enjoyable as 44 Scotland Street. The characters were too eccentric and not very likable.

When I have a baby (soon), then I'm so going to read this book to the baby. I think when my mom read this book to me as a child I took the pioneering spirit and made it my own. Not the part about staking out land, but the other parts, like how I named all my cats that I had growing up after characters in this book.... and like how I like bonnets.

The world of Nostradamus, to me, has always been riddled with mystery. This book seems to explain how he used alchemy and word games to predict events. It mentions the "akashic chronicles", which, to the spiritualist/cabbalist, is a ribbon of "memory" of events which surrounds the earth, written by "recording angels"!!!
