This is an ok book, I wouldn't reccomend it though if you have any sensitivity to disabled people. Definatly just a fun "GIRL'S" read

First book my book club read together...I really enjoyed it. It was interesting to crawl around in Tim's born-again head. Scary, but very interesting. Good liberal read....can't say more until after the club meets to discuss it!

Boy I haven't read a good ol' smut novel since probably high school, but aside from the age old predictable romantic pitfall, it was great. I really enjoyed the main character Madeline.

Okay so far, just a little disappointing as far as my current job search is going...

Difficult, even for Faulkner. But there is the usual reward for all the work -- a story that seems to filter the whole South through a particular, authentic single family. All the usual Faulkner notes are here -- racism, miscegenation, incest, pride, folly, decay -- but the narrative's circular, meandering path gives the story an entirely different effect than his other work. After reading Swann's Way, I came to feel that maybe Faulkner was exploring the range of modernism more fully than anyone else -- this book follows a style closer to Proust, while Sound and Fury and As I Lay Dying seem to follow a Joycean model more closely...
Hilarious, unconventional, intriguing. Who would have thought of pairing the founding fathers with the Beatles? Lane Smith, of course. A great way to jump off into more factual stories of the American History.
After Reading "Mistress of Rome", I am very curious what's in store for this one!?!?!? Want.It.Now.

Distinctly hit-or-miss. I tend to rate anthologies more highly, though, since once you've read them through, you can go back to the good ones as many times as you want. And there are good ones in here, no doubt about that. Ursula LeGuin's The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas is a beautiful statement of the utilitarian paradox. There are all the classics: Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Phillip K. Dick, and of course what's a dystopia without Kurt Vonnegut. There's even a short comic by Neil Gaiman, which you're not likely to have seen in print before. Among the good new ones, there are the depressing (The Funeral), the heartwarming (Amaryllis - yes, a dystopian anthology still has heartwarming stories), and the just plain weird (Caitlin R. Kiernan's The Pearl Diver). That said, about half the collection is distinctly mediocre. Some of it's trite, some's more political screed than story, and a couple are just flat-out poorly written. The editor has a lot to answer for here, between the frequent typos and the insipid story introductions. (The past few anthologies I've read have led me to the conclusion that the less the editor says, the better, with a possible exception for the VanderMeers.) I'm happy to have it, because it means I can go back and read "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman or The Minority Report whenever I want to, but like most anthologies, you need to be willing to sift through some trash to get to the treasure.
