I understand the tone set from this book, but it hindered the story in my opinion, don't think I'm going to look for anything else by this author.

A stirring account of Vietnam Congressional Medal of Honor winners, gallant heros of an unconventional war -- soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines. Lowry interweaves each hero's story with the backdrop of news and headlines of the times. He tells the background story that lead each soldier to serve his country and, when possible, includes interviews with those heros who survived their ordeal or those who witnessed the heroic act. Recommended to those who have an interest in military history, especially as it pertains to Vietnam.

I'm not the intended audience for this book, but I remember the outrage on Jezebel when this book came out. I expected this book to offend me on every page, but mostly it was a very sane argument for women to stop thinking they deserve a perfect fairy-tale ending, because perfect fairy-tale endings do not exist. No man (or woman) is perfect, and any relationship takes work. There was some feminism-bashing in the book (a whole chapter called "How Feminism Fucked Up My Love Life", as well as other comments throughout), which I didn't agree with. Gottlieb says, essentially, that feminism taught her not to settle, which I think is crap. Feminism tells you that you deserve equal rights and treatment. I think being an entitled, affluent, white woman taught her to think that she deserved nothing less than everything she wanted. If she wanted to get married but found herself unmarried at 41, that's her own fault, not feminism's. Aside from the misplaced blame, it seems like Gottlieb saw that she was sabotaging herself in the way that she dated and wanted to share her realization with others. She did so in a conversational, anecdote-filled style that was very readable.

"What, nephew," said the king, "is the wind in that door?" SIR THOMAS MALLORY Le Morte d'Arthur * * * "There are dragons in the twins' vegetable garden." * * * Then he rose up into the night like a great, flapping bird, flew, streaming across the sky, became a rent, an emptiness, a slash of nothingness-- * * * Within the deathly center of the dance it was dark; she could not imagine the whirling farandolae; she could not kythe Calvin or Sporos. She heard only a silence which was not silence because within this vortex there was an emptiness which precluded the possibility of sound. * * * Then the kitchen door blew open with a bang.

Second time i read this book and i still believe it's an amazing story. It's like twilight, new moon, and eclipse all together! Can't wait to read "Linger" (again).
