One of the most powerful, emotional, and thought provoking books I have ever read! An absolutely outstanding read.

So sad I finished this book and there's no more from King for awhile. I hate when that happens, but as he is a favorite of mine I gobbled this like chocolate cake with no regrets. I highly recommend this collection of long stories; a man who murders his wife for money and is haunted by her ghost, a successful mystery writer raped on her way home from a book signing in the middle of nowhere seeking revenge, a man dying of cancer at 51 who makes an irresistible deal with the devil, and a woman who discovers after over twenty-some years of marriage that her husband is a famous serial killer. It was raw, harsh, and dirty. I loved it! King makes no apologies in his afterword, in which he discusses getting into the darkness of his stories with a brutal honesty. He also mentions again that he writes for himself, not for the money, which is something as a writer I respect. When you start to write for the paycheck, it's time to retire because you aren't being yourself. And as King, I respect a writer more for tackling a harsh situation and getting in the dirt, rather than glossing over the uncomfortable topics and making unrealistic character decisions. Plus, as he says himself, a story with a good character in it is highly entertaining and memorable. And we all know King is a good study of the human condition. This was an AMAZING book. After living in the small town where this book takes place I couldn't help but read it from cover to cover in one setting. This book describes the town exactly as I remember. The author captures the beauty of the town and the attitude of the people. I feel like this book was more that just a piece of literature. I fell in love with Fort Kent when I lived there, missed it when I left, and fell in love with it all over again when I read Candles on Bay Street. I recommend this novel to anyone who has ever found their 'happy' place... the place they found themselves.

an easy and wonderful way to see the stars.
Very enjoyable if you like the cozies. I just discovered Dorothy L. Sayers after having gotten back into Agatha Christie for the first time since I was 12 or so... Sayers' characters are more swinging, the language more raunchy (though only just barely) and the plots are more risque (again, a bit) than Christie's work.

Unfortunately, this is not the sweeping novel of the Afghan experience that we've been waiting for. Hosseini spins a relatively good yarn, but for speaking for a region that so desperately needs a voice that Westerners can relate to he falls tragically short. Ultimately it's the bathos and the contrivances that drag it down.

Admittedly, I'm on a bit of an Anglophile kick - nonetheless, this was a delightful surprise acquired during a sale - and now I'm excited to explore more Hester Brown! The Finishing Touches picks up the story of Betsy Phillimore - an auburn haired 27 year old shoe store manager - who, as a baby was discovered in a marmalade box on the steps of London's premier finishing school. Now an adult, with the Academy in danger, and with the answers to who her biological parents may have been, Betsy, her best friend Liv, and a host of other delightful characters embark upon modernizing courses in deportment to the 21st century - with several suprising and fun results.
This is a great book by J.K. Rowling. Even though it may not use extremely high-level vocabulary like authors such as Shakespeare and Louisa May Alcott, it sure can capture an audience.
