I received this book from a giveaway on Goodreads with the expectation that I would write a review of it. I'm happy to say that this is an easy task. I think I'm fairly critical of most books, and tend to rate them with fewer stars than my peers on Goodreads. But the stars jumped out at me through the characters in this book. In the first two pages, I had decided that I probably wasn't going to enjoy the book. It begins with the main character, 36 year old Tom Violet, lamenting the state of his erectile disfunction. Less than excited about the prospect of an entire book on this topic, I charged on, regardless. By the second chapter, I was hooked. Although it took me a little longer than two days to finish, the book was a fast read, and I found myself reading long after I should have put it down gone to bed or done the dishes or any number of mundane tasks that were not as enticing as continuing to inhabit the world of Tom Violet and his family for just a while longer. Matthew Norman is part of a new group of storytellers who are at ease with male main characters who have emotions and thoughts and are allowed to express them. If not to the characters in the book, then at least to the reader. His writing style reminds me - in all the best ways - of Hornby, Perotta, and Tropper, writers whom I admire greatly. Norman is honest with his creation of Tom, and I appreciated that he was true to the other characters, as well. Sometimes, supporting characters can become either two-dimensional or caricatures. Norman skillfully kept all of his characters real. Flawed, but not overly flawed, humorous but not ridiculous, endearing but not sappy. It was a pleasure to read a first novel that was so well written and simply charming. I look forward to reading Norman's next effort.

This book is VERY different from the play. While I'm glad I read it before I saw the production, I'm also glad someone warned me. It is pretty long, but fun to read and really makes you care for the Wicked Witch of the West.

Melville's book is absolutely, positively worth fighting over. Not tug-of-war before bedtime fighting, but knock-down-drag-out, post-reading, you-think-Melville's-a-bloody-racist-while-I-think-he's-one-clever-cultural-relativist-anti-slavery-love-muffin kind of fighting. It's very likely that the fight will be internal. If it is not, and you share the fight with your friends and compatriots, bully for you all: you are probaby good, strong people, and I am impressed. As to the 3 stars: Melville's text gets a rather low "enjoyability" rating (a category that I just made up), for it is not a story-story, nor is it a love-story, nor is it a heartbreaking tale about the triumph of the human spirit. It's simply rigorous and rabble-rousing, in a roundabout way. That is, of course, an endorsement--just not for *every* reading occasion.

An easy-to-read book, involving complex familial relationships and the stories needed to be told in order to create or maintain harmony. Backdrop of Australia, England and Ireland. Cleverly written "extras" to the main cast, giving quite a personal view into the workings of (esp) different generational characters.

Three patients of Jeanne's are asked to spend one week at her house in Maine to help each other get over the traumas each has endured. Amy, Zoe and Faith are very unalike. Like the orginal book, Summerhouse, the ladies discover Madame Zoya's shop and select time travel with the option of being able to change the destiny of their lives. Early in the book, Faith was telling her story and it really captured my interest, but Deveraux chose Amy's story to highlight and the bulk of the book was spent on her time travel. Zoe and Faith went with her and they spent 3 weeks in 1800's England. I found that after they returned to Maine, the book rapidly wrapped up the stories of all 3 in such a quick, forced manner, I was left confused and unsatisfied. The whole plot of mysteriously finding Madame Zoya, doing the time travel with the choice of changing one's destiny worked really well for the first book, but was not as intriguing in the second.

I cant begin to describe this book. This author pulls you in to the story and you feel like you are a part of the family. I didn't want this book to end. The different twists and turns had me reading all through the night and not wanting to put it down. Whoever this Jette Brown is....she really knows what she is doing.

Definitely a book I didn't need to read. Even though the series continues, I'm not sure I'll have it in my heart to carry on. Similar to Twilight in subject matter and frivolity, The Vampire Diaries lacks the same nagging story: I don't want to know what happens and I wouldn't buy the book--even for a single read.
