A great story about good and evil being drawn together for the final stand! It's very long, but well worth the time !

A collection of Nick Hornby's book reviews from the magazine he writes for. I enjoy it because it gives you a list of books you want to read! I also reread this recently, and it was really funny, as he is. So I liked it.

Review originally posted on my blog http://hobbitsies.net/wordpress/2012/... New Girl by Paige Harbison is seriously intense. When I think boarding schools, I usually think light, gossipy, fun. New Girl certainly had its gossipy moments, but for the most part, there were so many intense character that it was actually pretty heavy. AND CREEPY. There was one character (you’ll know her when you see her) who seriously freaked me out – she was crazy. I would never, ever room with her. And Becca, the maybe-dead-not-sure protagonist is pretty psychotic too, but in an almost endearing way? I know that sounds weird, because I really couldn’t stand her for a majority of New Girl, but at the same time I felt really bad for her. I liked the main-main protagonist – I just realized I have no idea what her name is…we don’t find it out until the very end which is super interesting, I had to go back and look it up – and her determination to stick it out and show all the Manderly Academy bitches she’s not scared. The story in New Girl itself was engaging enough, although I never really gave in to the doubt that was planted in our head by various characters and story lines. I felt like knew what happened from the beginning, which was okay because it didn’t detract from the story, at least not to me. New Girl by Paige Harbison is perfect for those who are obsessed with boarding schools and slightly psychotic characters. It was a kind of intense read at times, but enjoyable.
Great book...clever author. Always nice to read about a plus-size character! All of her books are light-hearted and easy to read.

I'm normally not a huge fan of books with more than one main character from whom the perspective rotates, especially one with 4-5 characters... but these characters were all so intertwined, and the closeness of which they were tied together was revealed the more you read. It was hard to put down! I loved it.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit more than I did Choke, the only other Palahniuk book I've read. With strong echos of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," this is a creepy tale of intrigue and intergenerational mayhem on a small island off the coast of the United States. What lengths will the islanders go to to keep rich mainlanders off their island? And what does Misty Kleinman's artistic talent have to do with it? The story uncoils slowly, but with a growing sense of menace that made me truly uneasy. As with many of the best ghost/supernatural stories, the initial events are all plausible, if offputting, and as the story continues, it becomes more ambiguous, and finally, truly horrifying. From what I've seen, Palahniuk always seems to push the limits of his reader's stomachs, and this is not an exception - but it seemed (to me, anyway), to have a point this time, rather than just equating outrageousness with cool, hip, edginess. Diary uses the same kind of skin-crawling detail to a specific end, and it's integral to creating the strange world he does. I don't normally read books like this, but I'm glad I did this one.

I love Sarah Vowell so much that I hate to give her book a mere two stars. However, I finished it this morning, and my overall feeling was, "meh." A few good essays- nothing that stood out. A few more that went on too long. Maybe they would have been more enjoyable if I were listening to her read them aloud on NPR, but as a whole, this book just didn't work for me. I'm still looking forward to reading "Assassination Vacation," which I've heard is more cohesive.

Finally finished. What with keeping up with all the papers, health reader, choice, The Monthly, local papers, and being a slow reader (working on speeding up, I'm finding reading books the last thing I do. But did go to the library yesterday and borrowed, and read, Harold Pinter's 'Betrayal". A play that moves in reverse. In Fatty Dawn French covers her weight, IVF, adoption, racism, both in Oz and UK, a light hearted look at some interesting issues.
