Author Brett J. Talley has breathed new life into legends and stories as old as the Cthulhu creature itself. More importantly, he has captured the voice of the legendary writers who go before him. Told in the classic literary horror style of Lovecraft, Shelley, and Stoker, this book is alive with imagery and rich characters which bring to life the terrifying story in a way that will keep you up at night long after you have turned the last page. Told through the eyes of five main characters, the book strings together four stories that each could stand alone as masterful shorts, with a fifth that ties them together and moves them towards a terrifying ending. Carter Weston is a student from the legendary Miskatonic University, with a smiling nod to Lovecraft for the reference, and is charged with the task of recovering an ancient book of incredible value and, it turns out, untold power to awaken an evil that could destroy the world. On his quest he meets four men, each of whom share with him their own personal tales of horror which bring to life classic creatures like the wendigo, witches, the Kraken, and the terror of an insane asylum. In the tales of terror from the dark woods of New England to the mountains of Eastern Europe to the blue water oceans onboard great sailing ships from long ago, young Carter finds a thread that moves him on his quest towards its inevitable, spine chilling conclusion. In setting, characters, and tone Mr. Talley has done far more than mimic the classic masters of the genre—he has embodied them completely. This is an absolute must read for all lovers of the genre and any lover of well told stories. If you like adventure stories mixed with mystery and ancient legends of horror—you have found your perfect read in That Which Should Not Be. Brett J. Talley has made a dramatic entrance onto the fiction writing stage with this, his first book. I have no doubt his name will be well known and I look forward to his next works.

Kind of disappointing. Too many times characters opened their mouths and John Updike’s voice came out. He writes about sex in a quaint way that only ages well for those characters that age along with him. And occasional crude overreaches grate, like the black pimp whose mother named him “Tylenol” because she heard an ad in the delivery room and liked the name.

Kinsey is growing on me. I liked the more interaction with the police in this one, but I do wish that we could have seen more of them. I loved all the "old" people in the book. They were feisty and seeing them give Kinsey a hard time was part of the fun of the book. I also loved Mike, the pink mohawk guy, it would be great if for some reason he could be her sidekick.

3.5 18-year-old Karou is not your typical teenage girl. First of all, she's an art student living in Prague. Second of all, she has blue hair and tattoos. Finally, she was raised in a magical portal by Brimstone, a half-human/half-animal being who trades wishes in exchange for human teeth. She has spent most of her life running dangerous errands for him, traveling to the ends of the earth to bring back bags of teeth, but when burned handprints begin showing up on the doors she uses, it's the first sign that the life she has known is about to come to a end. As she is drawn into an age-old war between seraphim and chimera, she tries to find out who she really is and what her place in the world is meant to be. I used this book in a booktalk to illustrate how hard it can be to draw a line between paranormal romance and fantasy, and I think that very issue is why I didn't love it. I got sucked in by the fantasy aspect only to run smack into 50 pages of overwritten mooning from Karou and Akiva. I actually set the book aside in the midst of that and had a hard time picking it back up. I'm glad I did though, because once Taylor put down her thesaurus and stopped describing Akiva's gorgeousness, the story switched back into fantasy mode and ended up being pretty good. Taylor is a showy writer, but as long as the plot is moving along, it works. It's a little hard to empathize with the beautiful, talented, exotic, wish-rich, wisecracking Karou, but she at least she's a strong female character, unlike many other paranormal romancees. On an unrelated note, I wouldn't recommend listening to the audiobook on this one - the reader's "Czech" accent sounds suspiciously Irish, and the flowery prose teeters on the brink of ridiculousness when spoken out loud. Good for paranormal fans who want something different, fantasy fans who want a focus on romance, and girls who want a heroine who actually does stuff.

This book is sad but it really opened my eyes. It does a good job of describing the horrible events that occurred in France during world war II.

A short story now being re-released by Carina Press that involves two DEA agents who have been involved in the death of one of their own. One, Kendall was the agent's partner and Vincent was the undercover agent that accidentally shot him. Now they are being given "vacation" by the DEA for the purpose of psychological re-evaluation and some R & R to help deal with the aftermath of the accident. Both feel guilty but with the therapist's help and some close proximity to one another, gorgeous beaches, gentle trade winds, and a long sexual dry spell, they find comfort with each other. It is a very well-written short story--I always wish these stories were expanded and we could experience more of the characters' lives than just this one small portion of their experience. But I always enjoy Hart's writing and thought this was a quick but very good read.

I really thought this was going to be a journal about what a soldier was experiencing in war and being away from home. It was mostly about a single woman and her life with a few exerpts from the soldier.
