mmmm 3 stars. I'm not into Hollywood movie stars and little nobodies. I find it unrealist and also unappealing (for me). This specific movie star was deep more than usual (what such a terrible story... really a bit too much) but still a movie star... and she was a little more than our usual HPland doormat. I hoped she would have found some spine but she never did. I suspect this Cinderelle-versus-prince will be the theme of the whole series... let's hope not. Onto the next one.

I was desperate for a book to read during lunch, so I went to the tiny, crappy Waldenbooks in the City Center by my work. I couldn't find anything (because they don't have anything except for romance novels and current bestsellers, much like an airport convenience store), but then I thought I might consider High Fidelity. They didn't have it. This was the only Hornby book in stock. Lame. So I read it. And it's really not very good. Kind of irritating and obnoxious. Without having read any of his other books, I've decided this is his worst.

From the moment I picked up Better Together, I was hooked! A poignant tale of love and loss, the story completely pulls at the heart strings. With so many books out there that center around motherhood, it was very refreshing to read a novel that centered around fatherhood instead. Too many times, the man is portrayed as the bad guy, the bad husband, the neglectful father. The hero of this story is none of those things. Instead, he is a likeable man, a successful novelist who has moved back home in hopes of finding some much needed creative inspiration. Instead, his life takes a completely unexpected turn. The characters are extremely well developed, making it very easy to connect to them emotionally as the story progressed. The story was definately an emotional roller coaster and I was swept away along with the characters in their ups and downs. Even the less likeable characters had the ability to draw you into their stories. Loss hits early in the story, and the pain is palpable, as is the anger. But there is also lots of happiness and humor throughout the story as Paul finds his way through the new world of unexpected single fatherhood. Rose's sense of wit was apparent all through the story, one of my favorite giggle-inducing passages being the following: "Paul grabbed it from his hands, which sent the boy into a screaming fit as he told Paul in a language that Paul, thankfully, didn't understand what he could do with that package of uncooked chicken and what he really thought of Paul's mother."

What a great read. Just when I thought I had something figured out I would be proven wrong. I felt like I was friends with the characters and Sarah Addison Allen has a way of making this story come alive. I can't wait to discuss this book with the girls.

Here Lies the Librarian Here Lies the Librarian, by Richard Peck, opens with a twister reeking havoc in Beulah Land Cemetery, opening graves and leaving contents strewn all about. Pee Wee and big brother Jake, along with Aunt Hat and Colonel Hazelrag, who is stuck in time fighting the civil war, take all in stride. The library, shut down since the former librarian died on duty under the card catalog, is brought back to life when four Library Science Co-eds set out to bring refinement, charm and etiquette to the town and to a few of the town folk. A few unethical shenanigans, a toad at the library tea, a stolen car, and a race that ends in less than a photo finish are all the “price of progress” in this nostalgic but funny tale that is chock full of surprises. Personal thoughts: The card catalog may be long gone, but as library media specialists, it's important that we don't take the Colonel's road. A little charm, etiquette, and a whole lot of technoskill. Loved the book. Richard Peck, you walk on water!

An interesting and eloquent account of the struggle to find personal identity between two competing cultures.

Pre-Read - I’m told this is one part Candace Bushnell, one part The Devil Wears Prada, and one part John Le Carre! So…it’s a chic-lit thriller. I’m so in, oh yeah, and I understand there is steamy sex scenes. Ya had me at steamy! And this naughty book did not let me down from the first page on...I love reading fast paced & good chick-lit. I read in one setting - plagued or blessed by a quick ability to read fast. The writing was not a witty and fashionistaesque as Bushnell, but still a funny romp through London & New York!
