I don't think this is the edition that we had at home when I was a child. But I never saw the dustcover on that one, so I can't be sure. My mother used to read this book every Christmas Eve, doing all the voices, sound effects, and all. I remember this as the canonical version, and whenever I see a dramatization, I automatically compare it to my mother's rendition. Most fall short. Dickens was writing in a time when people read serialized stories aloud around the hearth at night. He crammed his stories with copious detail, down to the odd notion of a miser having more than one dressing gown. Even short ones like this have detail that I look for in vain in film versions. From the very start where Dickens questions why a door-nail should be considered particularly dead, through the emergence of the starveling, filthy children Ignorance and Want from the skirts of the Spirit of Christmas Present, to the very end, most (probably all) of the movie versions drop details even as window dressing. Even the Muppet version misses one or two, though it's more true to the original than many (ok, the rat bookkeepers singing "This Is My Island in The Sun..." in apology for complaining that their pens are inksickles is a bit of a liberty...but I'm sure Dickens would have included it if he'd thought of it.)

Finished the 1st of the series in 4 days- already LOVING this one... hoping it maintains... UPDATE: This one took me 5 days but did NOT disappoint. LOVE it. RACED to download and start the 3rd and final :-0 book- don't know if I can handle the aftermath/letdown. If you liked HUNGER GAMES- you WILL like this series.

Like Troost's previous book, "The Sex Lives of Cannibals", it's an amusing look at life in the south Pacific - Vanuatu and Fiji this time - but it's not as outrageous or as interesting as life in Kiribati. We seem at all times closer to civilization there, because we are, so it ultimately seemed more superficial.

I just finished the book and I probably need more thinking to do so I can figure out what happened in the end! I was expecting a huge ending but it didn't happen...I couldn't put down the book because I was so excited to find out what could possibly be a good ending for Sarah and little bee. I always thought they were two people who deserves a good ending. but this book is unlike any other. it's honest and real. and it hurts. it's a tragic story you won't easily forget.
