Education can and should be the practice of freedom, humanization, dialogue, and demythologizing. It is also the home to trust, humility, responsibility, love, and hope. Its participants are teachers-students and students-teachers, who "become jointly responsible for a process in which all grow." (80) Success is marked by the emergence of consciousness.

Sometimes I'm annoyed at the contrivance of inserting a fictional character into famous historical events, but with Flashman it works very well. I'm totally willing to believe that he got caught up in the 1857 Indian Mutiny (or India's First War of Independence, depending on your point of view) and lived to tell the tale - including surviving the Siege of Cawnpore and subsequent massacre. Flashy is just as arrogant, cowardly and lecherous as ever; and just as wry an observer of human nature. The subject matter does make this episode darker than most. Flashman's selfish nature is toned down a bit as he's genuinely disturbed by the atrocities he witnesses. A fascinating, informative, and hilarious read, as always with this great set of books.
Great

This was another hesitant read for me...modern tales involving pointless mass slaughter and displacement depress me to the core. Anyhow, once I started, I couldn't stop. I even left my wallet on the bus because I was so engrossed in the story. It was a painfully tragic read, but my annoyingly persistent optimism kept me going on, thinking "it must get better for him, right?" I cried a lot during this book. Gained some hardcore perspective, however fleeting.

"In the weeks following her death, Susie watches life on Earth continuing without her -- her school friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her family holding out hope that she'll be found, her killer trying to cover his tracks. As months pass without leads, Susie sees her parents' marriage being contorted by loss, her sister hardening herself in an effort to stay strong, and her little brother trying to grasp the meaning of the word gone." I liked this book well enough. It wasn't the deep, emotional read I was expecting from the subject matter. I felt detached from the main characters. An interesting read, but lacking the horror and emotional intensity the murder of a young girl should warrant. Even the family's grief, was muted and distant.

So, what do you get when you take the hit 80s movie 'WarGames', Artemis Fowl, and even a bit of 'X-Men: First Class'? You get Evil Genius. This book is awesome. That's really all there is to say. I don't think any novel has ever delved into so much detail about the life and personality traits of an anti-protagonist before, not until this book trilogy came along. It centers around hacking and technology, which is a subject I'm personally not very good at. In fact, I found myself consulting Google every now and then, as I was reading some odd techno-geek lingo that I didn't particularly understand very well. You've really got to pay attention to what's going on in this book. But, in the end, it's totally worth it. The characters are extremely well developed, and make no mistakes, this is a character based novel. I found myself wishing that all these characters were real, and not just some figment of an author's imagination. And if an author is able to do that, create characters that you wish were real, then that's how you know that what you've got in your hands is a real keeper. This book has some great material to break up the monotony of technology. For example, it's got the average teenage drama that comes with being a growing adolescent, it's got fun characters with interesting powers, and it's even got a bit of wit and dark humor every now and then, as the professors at the university are constantly bickering and plotting against one another. Even if the book doesn't sound like it's for you, at least give it a go. There's got to be at least one aspect of this novel that appeals to everyone, no matter how slight it may be. And in then end, that's all that matters, right?

A long and very thorough history. The best -- and most disturbing -- part of this book is the author's description of the rise of a violent right-wing movement out of Algeria's white settlers and disgruntled members of the army in the closing days of the war.
