I read this in hope of gaining more insight into our potential future President. It is a story of how he came to be who he is, fighting the racism and stereotypes that he faced and the demons he struggled with. It was well written, very emotional and detailed, but I still came to the end of the book with an unmoved and non-reactionary attitude. It ended up being more of a diary and writing for himself than for public consumption. I'm glad he went through this process, especially if he is to be President, however, I found it lacking as a literary work.

The author of this book has won a Pulitzer Prize, and you can tell. The characters have a lot of depth and emotion, and it's easy to get caught up in the story - even when it doesn't go the way you think it will.

Hands down the best book about a dentist published in the same year my great grandfather was born.

When Maggie's father, a rancher in 1886 Colorado, is injured, Maggie's mother takes him to town to see a doctor. That leaves Maggie alone with her spoiled city cousin, Hadyn, who is visting Colorado as a punishment for being expelled from school. Hadyn and Maggie have a fight, and Hadyn runs away, determined to find the train station. When Maggie learns Hadyn never made it to town, in spite of hating him, she sets out to find him in the wilderness. But a blizzard descends upon the mountains, trapping Hadyn and Maggie in a harsh and unforgiving wilderness. If they are going to survive and find their way home, Hadyn and Maggie have to work together. This book was an exciting survival story in a historical setting.

I loved this book! I recommend it to any other polical news junky. The author is a former white house aid so it's very fun to read about things that the general public doesn't know about white house / washington life. Additionally, it's a fun fictional novel.

A wonderful, sprawling read. The 'Obscure Object of Desire' sequence is a sad and very pretty love story nested inside the main tale.
This is my absolute favorite book of all time. It's powerful, ironic, emotionally rigorous and intellectually engaging. It's basically a collection of short stories and sketches by one author about the partition of India and Pakistan, which if you don't know much about, you should! Please please read this book.
