I loved Ackroyd's fiction. This simply doesn't compare and the subject matter is so fractured that it is difficult to keep interested in the fascination that is Venice. Ye Gods this book is sententious, tiresome and tedious in the extreme.

This book is a good, thought provoking, short read. If any one has contemplated whether or not there is life after death then this book would be an excellent read. It walks the reader through the commonly held belief that good people go to heaven...don't they? It explains that in actuality good people do not go to heaven and if any one thinks that they are a good person they are definitely in for a surprise when they pass on from this life. The question remains, if good people do not go to heaven, and heaven is real, then who does make it in?

I’ve read books on death and bereavement for the past 6 months, but this is the first that has made me teary. I am half-way through and tempted to finish the last 100 pages at work, for “research”. As usual, Didion sweeps you along with affecting prose and sense of place. She admits that she’s often been “withholding” in her writing, that is, she’s used words to create another self and mask true thoughts and feelings behind an “impenetrable polish”. She's been finally exposed here through writing about deep sadness and pain after the loss of her husband. I appreciate Didion’s early acknowledgement of a steely ability to distance herself from emotion –at least publically—and I empathize with her attempts to dam up waves of grief. (Perhaps the source of my reading tears?) This book is a toughie, but I cannot put it down.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I seem to be on a bit of a twin theme this year. The book was well written and I found myself sympathising with all of the characters, including the 'memory keeper'.
