Why did the an Empire that was no longer ruled from Rome - instead was ruled jointly in the periphery by highly romanised Gauls, Britons, Spaniards, North Africans, Italians collapse in the west - whilst in the East the maily Jewish-Coptic-Greek Eastern Empire survived? Had the Western Romans in Gibbons opinion really become pygimies? Or had the need for a central capital and Emperor become obsolete? Grant deals with various reasons 1. Religion and the affect pasive christainity had on the Empires resolve to fight 2. Lack of Roman idenity 3. Economy 4. Weak central control and fighting for purple 5. Decline of Roman Army Well worth reading - if only as an overview.

Andersen Prunty is a weird guy. I assume. I mean, I don't know him personally, but anyone who has this stuff inside their brain can't be normal, right? The Overwhelming Urge is chock full of strange people doing even stranger things. The stories are brief -- sometimes only a couple of paragraphs -- so it has the feel of an overheard conversation or catching something bizarre out of the corner of your eye as you drive down the street. The main themes here seem to be alienation and sorrow -- the wisest man in the world comes to your house and craps on your rug, a new haircut changes a man's life, a walk to the mailbox ends in tragedy . . . I'm not sure what any of it means, but it sure is fun trying to figure it all out. My favourite story was "The Bright Side", where the narrator discovers his father has turned into an antelope. I'm not sure why, but I found the idea charming, and Prunty's description of the transformed father was exactly how I image a human/antelope would be. This book is a very fast read, perfect for keeping in a car or purse for something quick to read while waiting at the bank, carpool line, etc. Highly recommend, especially for fans of Bizarro.

This has been hard to get into compared to "White Teeth" by the same author which was amazing. I always think its a shame when you read an author's best work first as it spoils the rest. Maybe I would like this better if I had read it first.

This is like an old friend, one that you love forever. Although this is not the best story in the world and is some what simplistic in its treatment of the reader, it is one that has woven its self into my heart. It is my go to book when I need to touch home and to feel comfortable. this book started my reading obsession and I have read far better books since but I still love this one and always will.

I'm a sucker for these "What If?"/Alternate reality books and this one was one of the better in the genre. I read it start to finish in one night, so it definitely was an easy read and held my attention more than adequately. Can't say I 100% loved the resolution of the book, but it's the one that made the most sense.

I was very young when I discovered this book at the library and it's still magical. If you've never read it, treat yourself!

As near perfect as a book can get: a sharp, spunky heroine, well built futuristic reality, suspenseful action, engaging supporting characters, and (best of all from a YA novel) well-written prose. The author does not talk down to her younger readers, nor is it unnecessarily complicated. The dystopian future, while slightly far-fetched (do all the people of District 12, formerly "Appalachia", live in such a small area that they can all be on hand in the town square for an event?) is believable enough so that you don't get bogged down too much with trying to figure out the nagging little things about it. You're too swept up in the story, actually. That's really the best thing about this is that it is addictive. I almost literally could not put it down. When trying to engage young readers, this is absolutely your best bet. It's a bonus that adults will be just as intrigued. Okay, now, off to read the next one. (I heartily recommend buying all three at once, because if you don't you're liable to find yourself at Wal-Mart in the middle of the night purchasing sequels.)

When I was in middle school I went through a ship/shipwreck phase and this book happened to be in the school library. I found it tragic yet fascinating, so many things could have been done differently and could have brought about a lot of different out comes. It's mind blowing to think of the what ifs.
