Following a suicide attempt, Berman's nameless teen protagonist starts being able to see and speak to ghosts. He also falls in love with one: the spirit of a high school jock who was hit by a car in 1957. It's every emo kid's dream, right? Ahh, but of course there is a catch—namely, that the ghost, Josh, has major jealousy issues; his death may have been related to the fact that he thought his boyfriend, Roddy, was cheating on him with another guy. Berman does a great job with atmosphere—his spirits are really creepy, and he achieves this without the slightest bit of Stephen King- (or even Sixth Sense-) level gore. He also creates for the nameless narrator a really interesting group of friends: goth gal extreme Trace; Trace's intriguing younger brother, Second Mike; girlfriends-on-the-outs Maggie and Liz. (Though why the fifth, Kim, is always referred to as "the annoying Asian girl" or "the skinny Asian girl" is beyond me. Dude, we get it: SHE'S ASIAN. Did someone of Asian-extraction dent your car or something?) Oddly, though, despite its promising beginnings, the book actually becomes less suspenseful as it goes along; the climax was not nearly as intense or as frightening as it ought to have been. The book is still compelling, but it needed a little extra oomph at the end. (Maybe Bruce Willis should've shown up just so the narrator could tell him he was already dead.)

** spoiler alert ** This book was VERY GOOD! Although some of the language was hard to understand. I loved Jim and Hucks friendship and how they grew together. I love how Twain makes Jim the voice of reason and essentially wiser than any white man. i enjoyed the various adventures Huck and Jim went through. Went Huck met the King and Duke, or when he turned into a girl or when he met the Grangerfords. I very much enjoyed this novel.

Diana Gabaldon is one of my favorite authors today, particularly with the Outlander series. I believe this particular book is a little pale compared to any part of the Outlander series, and I would never have thought to purchase it if it was by another author. However, since I am waiting for the next installment in the Outlander series, I decided to get this. It reminded me right away how good Gabaldon is but this book has nowhere near the magic of Outlander et seq. I would say the Lord John book is a bit on the naughty side, and not really what you want your teenagers to read. The Outlander series is mature, but I could say most assuredly that the two characters make the best marriage team in literature, in my estimation. The "love scenes" are exquisite and do not gratuitously fill the book, but the book otherwise features adventure, bravery, courage and integrity.

** spoiler alert ** Oh, I waited too long to review this novel. The Beach is about a man that meets a French couple in Bankok and travels, by a hand-drawn map, to a remote, private island inhabited by only 30 adults whose goal is to form and maintain a utopian society. At first, nothing could be better. The people living on the island have specific jobs, schedules, and a mutual love for eachother. Oh, not to mention the island is breath-takingly beautiful. As in any "perfect" situation, things go a bit awry. I won't ruin anything, but it's to be expected. I rated this book a three because it was an easy, enjoyable read. Towards the end, the main character begins to hallucinate with the man that drew him the map in Bankok and then committed suicide. Though suspenseful at times, this concept confused me. I had to read, specifically the ending, two times before I fully understood what was going on, and even then I had to clear my thoughts with an online blog. What seemed unreal was indeed, real. Maybe that was the author's intention, but I just found it annoying. What brought me to this book initially was the movie, which I saw years ago and remember enjoying.
