Truth be told, I'd probably give this a 3.5 but went with 3 as it wasn't a strong 3.5. There were many nice things about this book, but overall it is just another Wartime Remembrance that doesn't seem to offer any new insights. The writing is strong though and definitely worth reading for those interested in the tragedies of that time

I reread the other Blue Blood books before I continued with this one and they really held up to a second reading, they were much better than I remembered. The writing is actually pretty good. I like the way she describes the characters and I definately want to know what happens next. It's like gossip girl but with vampires. I like the whole demonology heaven/hell thing too, it's interesting. I think this book was too short though!

I'm re-reading this for the first time in probably a decade. It's so far (on pg160) better than I recall. I'm not sure if it gets worse as it goes on, if the span of a decade has changed my tastes, or what, but so far it's been enjoyable. From an anthropologically trained perspective yes, there are some clear issues. The main character as blonde and blue-eyed and "superior" to her adoptive community. The notion of racial memory and some of the more metaphysical themes are a bit "woo." But this is fiction, not ethnography or history or an archaeological report. If read as fiction with an eye toward a good story and some fun world-building and interesting, though ultimately unprovable ideas about prehistory it's fun, light-reading. It has the additional advantage of helping paint a picture of prehistoric life for hunter-gatherers in a way that many dry, scholarly texts cannot. In that way, it has the potential to be useful as a teaching tool as well - a way for students to approach the topic and a framework for larger class-room discussions as well. Having finished it, I have to say that the impression above is basically unchanged. Decent read, not terribly outrageous so far as details, and it has potential as a teaching tool.

Ishiguro writes a poignant and and nuanced retrospective, told in the first person by a proper English butler, which conveys beautifully this aging man's stoic regret for a life past.

Such an emotional landscape portrayed with clarity and authenticity. The emotional journey was worth reading the whole book for. Such a refreshing interlude between the unimaginably perfect stories of unreal and epic solutions to crime and political intrigue. Where most would still find this story unimaginable, I found so much reality in it in different ways that the story was cathartic.
Very accurately, a critical essay on this novel is called "Grotesque Naturalism." The amazing thing Norris does here is describe the disgustingly banal in simple language; this makes it all the more "grotesque" and accomplishes its goal perfectly. Norris depicts life from a distance, equally regarding all aspects. I found that I either had to find every character at fault, or none of them. I still haven't decided which - or if such a decision is really necessary. The story made me cringe at points, but I can't get it out of my head.
