This is the most singular and comprehensive guide to Conservative halachah available. It's also, as far as I'm aware, the only comprehensive guide to Conservative halachah. In some places it shows its age and the structure of the book leaves something to be desired. Nevertheless it is an indispensable reference. I hope that in time it will spawn a couple of commentaries that maintain its relevance.

Toshi is a japanes detective who has to deal with some unsolved cases of murder: couples who are slaughtered during the lovemaking with a samurai's sword. No clues that lead to the murderer, no one. John is an empathic american cop who is sent on Tokyo to help Toshi. And for Toshi is speaking english and has lived in America for some years during college, is asked to host John. Toshi is handsome and a very closed person. During is american years he has loved a man, Michael, but when his family has asked him to return to Japan, he has accepted and now he has also agreed to marry the woman his family has choosen for him. Even if he can't love her, even if she loves another man. John is a 37 years old veteran, tired of the madness of the world, but still eager for the human touch even if he can't touch nobody: when he touch someone, he is overwhelmed by the thought and feelings of the other person, and it is very stressful. But when he touch Toshi, he only feel warn and the feeling to be his. And the need to be with him. The touch of Toshi is like a shell from the outside world. More they dig on the case, and more they understand that something not human is involved with the cases, and that their love is not unrelated to it. A very interesting suspence romance novel, where the romance maybe sometimes steal the scene to the suspence, but it is not a negative thing, cause Toshi and John are two wonderful characters, very balanced: no one is more stronger or weaker to the other. http://www.amazon.com/dp/1934166839/?...

i know that not everyone can read this book in italian, obviously, and admittedly, i found the translation (Survival in Auschwitz) a little bit flat. but it is so beautiful, so profound, so sad, that even if the translation doesn't do it justice, everyone must read it anyway. simply because it deserves (and demands) to be read.

PLOT SPOILER WARNING! Scroll down for review. Great gothic novel. While the book does romanticize the Victorian era in places, it also deals with the reality of crime and being gay in the Victorian era. This book had a wonderful female protagonist who went from mousy to moxy by the end of the story. There was some sex, which could have been skipped, but wasn't too nauseous to read. The setting was colorful. Who doesn't love a woman accused of murder out to prove that the Spiritualist Movement was a scam? I've always been interested in this particular Victorian trend and it was well addressed here. I also spent a lot of time drooling over fictional jewels and clothing I wished I owned. Sadly, I'm sitting here nursing an eye injury in 2011 without either. Oh well! LOL I recommend this book with five stars! Loved it! The subplots were fantastic as well as the plot twists, though by the middle half of the book I had figured out whodunit. this was a wonderful book. eggers uses an ingenious narrative structure to tell this complex, compelling, and heartbreaking story. valentino's story is devastating and inspiring itself, but it all the more so bc it is a story of a generation of boys and families in southern sudan. mcsweenys has some good links about valentino and about what one can do about the ongoing situation in darfur.

If you like suspense novels this is an easy read. It's set in Baltimor but mostly the Bay Area, CA and was written by a medical student I worked with at Stanford, Josh Spanogle. He's a new author, but did a great job with this book. It's a "medical thriller" focused around an outbreak that occurs and pinpointing the source.
