Touch, Alexi Zentner's debut novel is a wonderful mix of Grimm-like folk lore and family history which follows three generations of a family - a son, his parents and his grandparents - during the treacherous winters of the Canadian wilderness. Stephen, an Anglican priest has returned home on the eve of his mother's death and while he keeps vigil at her bedside he recalls his childhood and family stories. The way in which Stephen's narration skips from memory to memory as actual recollection does is very clever and is yet another element that makes this an enchanting and elegant novel. Touch is a haunting tale of love and loss and the magical realism blends in quite effortlessly with the novel's emotional heart. A wonderful find.

Well I really like Ms. Feehan's stories (when she stops reiterating and going over old ground again and again), but it is a shame that the characters are all type-cast. The men (I can understand - it is a common trait for Carpathian males to be domineering, overly possessive and necessarily protective of their females), but I don't get why all the men go for the same type of woman. They are always fiercely independent women who seem to be loners whether they be Carpathian or human, yet they always end up submitting - which is a good thing as we want the hunky men to stay alive with their emotions and colours intact. But why the hell can't the women come from ordinary families, rather than always being damaged or wounded in some way? I have read these stories all out of sequence which hasn't caused a problem at all. I went from the Scarletti pre-curser then Dark Prince, then all the way to Dark Peril. So far I think now that they are being a bit mundane (yet I strangely can't stop reading them as I want to learn all about ALL the characters now that I have encountered them in Dark Celebration, which is a bit of a disappointment as the series began so well. Oh well, the sexy scenes bring some fun, although I do think Ms. Feehan should stop being so up tight with her tendencey to always describe the "feminine core" and "velvet sheath"! Jeez, I think we are all grown ups reading these stories.

I just don't get what people see in this book. I bought it for the great reviews, hated it for the main character. His language sounded more like an English professor than a young short order cook. It probably deserved 2 stars rather than the 1 I gave it but just trying to balance out the universe.

Excellent and rare plays that are likely not available elsewhere in English.
the book written without the letter E. how amazing, both the french and english version.
The best yet? Maybe, it was certainly a great read and quite different from the previous letters.
Read for book club. Still don't understand the appeal of Jodi Picoult. Her stories are all very similar and her writing style is young adult.

This book recalls the events of Jane Austen's EMMA from Mr. Knightley's perspective. I like how he treats the loquacious Miss Bates in the end.

TTBRMMWTRT. I really wanted this the second it came out, as the review was so good, but I waited and waited; it was worth the weigth. This is one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while, and I was surprised to discover, one of the most adictive; I couldn't put it down! Cohen has a light, very funny style, and this messy, sweeping memoir/history/research/crime/sociology/family-saga takes in everything - the history of Sweet & Low, the company his grandfather invented; the history of Brooklyn; sugar and how it influenced world history; dieting; lobbying the FDA; how the mob got involved in Sweet & Low; and, ultimately, why his mother and all his siblings were written out of their grandmother's will. I finished it in 2 days and wished it was twice as long.
