This book was delightful! I had no idea it was a true story until I read some of the author's notes. Maybe it was delightful to me because I dream of living the kind of summer she actually did! I've always had a slight love affair with Tiffany's and NYC so it was a perfect combination for me.

** spoiler alert ** This was a great book, easy to read. Brynna was dedicated to her passion of dancing and was self motivated to rehearse in order to achieve her dream. The family interaction was also interesting with 2 brothers quite different. one successful footballer and another that could not cope with city life - but did her give it enough time. To read of the mothers earlier lifetime passion and see her reignite her passion for basketball was also fun. To feel the family pain at the major workplace accident was also sobering.

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's packed with rapier-sharp wit and hilarious misadventures, all delivered at breakneck speed. It's also a story of unexpected depth, despite the ridiculously shallow cast of characters and their asinine preoccupations. There's nothing particularly profound about the people and the 80s New York lifestyle it satirises, and it's not a book that screams Literary with a capital L. But make no mistake, it's very finely written and full of acute observations and three-dimensional characters. The real triumph of this book is probably that McInerney writes so convincingly as Alison Poole. If he weren't a man and famous in his own right for a distinctly different personality, I'd accuse this novel of being a thinly-veiled autobiography. He nailed the voice that well. I've come across some criticisms that this book lacks a 'plot', but when you're reading about characters and situations as hideous and amusing as the ones in this book, a plot almost seems beside the point. This is a character novel that succeeds both as entertainment and as a work of literature.

This was a very thought provoking book. Very touching stories of ordinary people who suffered terribly through the tragic famine of the 1990's in the DPRK. I'm shocked that this nation has come through these trials with the same government without a "revolution" such as those in Eastern Europe. What was most saddening in some situations, however, was their lives after defection to South Korea. Sometimes the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Highly recommend this read to anyone interested in North Korea.

Bastante interesante. Claramente, un trabajo temprano de Orson Scott Card, que creo que muestra cómo el concepto parece superar la historia y los personajes.
