This is an adventure story, enormous mountains, men who climb them, people who live in them, a country called Afghanistan post 9-11 all tell a swashbuckling story. There is a kidnapping, mystery, western journalists, war, love and puzzles to be solved. In the midst is Greg Mortenson building schools, one at a time, in inhospitable Afghanistan and Pakistan. Haunting self reliance as seen in "Out of the Wild", Jon Krakauer. Poetic descriptions helped me imagine mountains I may never see. This is an intriguing and inspirational story. Yes, the style of writing is run on, the chapters interminable. I speed read through much of it.

All I have to say about this book is that it's incredible...but I liked the movie better. Sad, but true.

The authors have cute names. There is wacky speculation on intelligent spores from outer space. It makes growing mushrooms look hard, particularly considering that these fungi are often said to grow on cow poop. Cow poop which doesn't have to go through an autoclave or be sprayed with lysol, incidentally.

An amazing memoir of a woman who experiences the Rwanda genocide and is able to find tender mercies throughout her horrific trials. I am in awe of her incredible faith and ability to survive. I loved that even though she puts the reader amidst nightmare-ish scenes, you are able to cope because of her spin and inner strength.

Very bizarre book - honestly not sure whether I liked it or not. He writes about his horrible, abusive childhood with a clinically insane mother but does it in a humorous way. Like I said, bizarre.

here's what you do. you set aside a few uninterrupted blocks of time, or just one block if you're up for it, and read this one. it reads quickly, but the subject matter is so weighty you don't want to cheapen the experience by reading it on the bus (as I did once or twice), or in little spurts, two things you might be tempted to do with a quick read. not only do you want to avoid this kind of small-dose reading to respect the intensity of the (true) story, but also because the story is Depressing, and you might as well read it quickly, feel it 100%, and then pick up a lighter read. don't let the sad part turn you off, though; it's a lovely book. definitely recommended.
This is a stunningly nostalgic book - it's the YA equivalent of The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, and if that isn't the most pretentious thing I've said on Goodreads, I'll eat my shoe. Also, one of the villians of the piece is from the Duchy of Botstein. Ha!
this book tells the stories of three (plus) generations of family and tries to weave them together - not the most original premise, but its always interesting to read about how individuals fit into and are impacted by their families. that being said, i think i missed some things throughout the book.... i often found myself not understanding whole paragraphs at a time and thinking that the puzzle would come together (for me, it never did).

I didn't find this book to be scary either as I am very rarely frightened by books. I did have high hopes for it, as the American film version is one of the few movies that really creeped me out. (I'm a big horror film fan but none have stayed with me as long as The Ring. I can freak myself out just thinking about it.) I found the book interesting, but not scary. As mentioned by others, it is sufficiently different enough from the films to be engaging and I liked the differences very much. I'm curious about the Japanese version; would like to see it to compare it to this book and the American film. I will say, though, that I found the writing in this book to be very simplistic. Maybe that is why I didn't find it eerie -- there just wasn't enough description for me. Not a vivid enough picture was painted. I didn't find myself very sympathetic to the characters either, though their plight was one that should definitely evoke sympathy. All in all, I did enjoy reading it, but primarily for comparative purposes. If I wasn't such a fan of the film, I don't think I'd care for the book very much. I suppose this is one of the VERY rare times I liked the movie better.

I love this book because this is about finding who you are, and acknowledging that fact. For Rachel, it is hard, becuase she has two sides, fighting. She acknowledges the two, but does not know haw to deal with it. It is true for a lot of people. i hope that they come to terms, as Rachel did. Just read this book, and see. ☺
