I have loved every Andrea Barrett book I've read, most especially The Voyage of the Narwhal. Somehow I was a little disppointed with this one. Maybe it was because the first copy I received had a 16-page section missing in the middle! Kudos to the Book Depository for getting a replacement to me within a week, but I was reading something else by then and had lost the thread; I had to skim-read to get back into it.[return][return]So long story short, as usual Barret beautifully incorporates science into a story of real people living difficult lives. It's a subtle meditation on group dynamics anc casual xenophobia.

This novel could have been a great book, as it has all the elements of a good tale: a boy in an orphanage, hardships in the mining industry, joining a circus. But it wanders all over. There is no major thread that holds each section together. It is chock-full of coincidences, and plots points seem to happen at random, according to the author's will. Disappointed.

احمد محمود یک قصه گوی بومی ست، با روایت هایی خطی و مضامینی سخت اجتماعی. آثار محمود اگرچه در ادبیات معاصر ما قابل تامل اند، اما در مقایسه با ادبیات امروز جهان، مقام بلندی نصیبشان نمی شود. با این همه اگر حوصله ای باشد و حال و هوایی برای شنیدن خاطرات پدر بزرگ از جنگ و کودتا و طبقات محروم و... خواندن آثار احمد محمود در رده ی بالای اولویت هاست. او از نسلی ست که بیش از ادبیات، به جامعه گرایی و مردم گرایی گرایش داشتند (از جمله محمود دولت آبادی). زبان احمد محمود ساده، شیرین و خودمانی ست. این ویژگی در برخی از داستان های کوتاهش مانند "پسرک بومی" و هم چنین در اولین رمانش "همسایه ها"، چشمگیر است. همسایه ها بهترین اثر بلند احمد محمود و دلچسب ترین کار اوست. در "داستان یک شهر" و به ویژه در "زمین سوخته"، این "مردمی" بودن و "اجتماعی نویسی"، صمیمیت قلم او را خفه کرده است، و عبارات، گاه به شعار تبدیل می شوند. در "مدار صفر درجه" دوباره از اجتماعی نویسی فاصله می گیرد. با این همه "مدار صفر درجه" هم از هر لحاظ، پایین تر از "همسایه ها" ایستاده است.

Clearly based in scientific facts and lots of good humor, this will provide hours of fun for young readers curious about the secret lives of parasites. Slimy frogs, hairy dogs, tough sharks, even people have parasites living on their skin and inside their bodies. Davies uses a conversational style, paired with Layton’s funny, cartoon-like drawings, to introduce the reader to real scientific terms and ideas. Parasites’ adaptability to their environment is crucial for their survival. Did you know that a tapeworm inside a human intestine can grow to 60 feet long?! “They don’t need a mouth or a gut of their own, because they just float around in your digested food and soak it up through their skin.” Eeww!! But what 10 year old won’t love telling this at the dinner table? Davies writes in a funny and engaging way; she shares information in bite-sized pieces, perfect for reluctant readers who need to be drawn into a book. The writing style reminded me somewhat of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid style, in its informal approach – but this has much more content. Have fun – but be prepared for some disgusting dinner conversations!

If you can get over the fact that a German is teaching you Italian (makes for some interesting accents!!) then these are great!! Michel Thomas was my introduction to Italian via my boyfriend. I listened to this in preparation for our trip to Italy and it helped to prepare me. I can't use Michel Thomas on it's own though, I have to use it in conjuction with another course as Michel Thomas is all audio with no books so you never see or write the words which I need. These are great courses though.
