Kingsolver's writing is very lyrical and sensual, and this story showcases it well. Very earthy. A nice novel to read when you need a spiritual (non-religious) pick-me-up.

Brenna is afraid to give her heart away ever since her true love left her many years ago. Now that she is in her 30's and running an historic movie theatre, he is back in town, turning her life upside down. Very good story, lots of loose ends and they all get tied up at the end. Favorite quotes from the book:] "Life isn't perfect. It's not supposed to be. We all make mistakes. You bash your head against the wall and you get hurt, but you walk away and make the beset of it. And that's what makes it life, Brenna, not perfection. You'll never find happiness if you only expect to find it in a perfect life. Happiness is something we reach for while we try to learn from the disappointments." "Why can't He make the sun shine all the time? I don't like the dark" ......"Not many of us do. But we wouldn't appreciate the brightness of the sun as much if we didn't have to go through the night first....sometimes we have to go through the darkness first before we can find the light. But the light is always there, just like the sun will always be there on the other side of the night.....I want you to remember that no matter how dark the night, the sun will always greet you in the morning."

It was an easy read but extremely disappointed with the plot and language. (not judging based on whether the story is true or not, but of how the book is written). every paragraph ended with an exclamation mark which didn't add any effect to the horror which the book is trying to present. more paranormal activities would have been nice. There was no buildup of suspense or any mystery. The entire book was solely about the strange things happening in 112 ocean drive. felt like a promising horror story when I first started, unfortunately it ended off flat - no mystery/horror at all, didn't give me the creeps. the pig was pretty cool though - RED EYES.

I read about half of this book when I was 10. When discovered reading this, it was taken from me, and explained to me that this book was too mature for me. I cried. And I remember receiving accolades for reading Romeo and Juliet that year...but aren't they about the same thing--star-crossed lovers faced with choosing each other over the dictums of society?

though both of obejas's novels deal with very complicated characters with sometimes paradoxical desires and with the elusive lure of memories, i think "memory mambo" is a bit stronger because of the tangled relationship of the main characters.

Eh- it was okay. I think I can do without reading the rest of the series for a while. It was pretty boring the first part of the book- then at about 50% it got a little more interesting.
