** spoiler alert ** Amazing story. Absolutely amazing. I have such a deeper appreciation now for why they are called "The Greatest Generation." Pretty much the entire book, I was on pins and needles and feeling so worried for Louie. I could not believe the descriptions of abuse in Japanese POW camps- I know I would not have had the mental fortitude to survive it. That is, if I somehow managed to survive the plane crash and FORTY THREE DAYS ADRIFT IN A LIFE RAFT WITH NO PROVISIONS!!!!!!!!!!! The entire book, I was just blown away by Louie's life. How he managed to survive. Amazing. I was a little worried toward the end because of the whole alcoholism thing, but of course, Louie managed to pull through and be our hero once again. The one disappointment with the story is that "The Bird" never gets his due. I would have liked to see someone hit him or have him stand trial, but since this is real life and not a novel, I can't blame the author for that. One thing I really liked, and which didn't truly register as "great" until the very end of the book- the author doesn't just drop Louie's raft mate Phil (Allen). Before they crash, Phil is given a short biography, during the days adrift at sea, he is focused on as well, and at the POW camps, the author occasionally touches back to his experience as well, though obviously not to the extent she focuses on Louie. In the Epilogue, Phil is described as being treated as a "footnote" to Louie's story- everyone focuses on Louie's plight, but Phil endured the same. So to have the author treat him as more than a "footnote" was a great part of the book, but something I didn't realize until I read the epilogue. I think everyone should read this book. It should be required reading.

Firefly Lane is about two best friends "TullyandKate" and their life together. Kate Mularkey meets Tully Hart in the summer of ‘74. Kate is the shy, nerdy type when you meet her, but when she meets "the coolest girl in the world" (Tully) she becomes popular by association. Tully, on the other hand, has the coolest friends, the biggest boobs, the hottest clothes, yet she lacks a "real" friend and the love of a family. Upon that meeting, we are taken on a journey through high school, college, post-college years, careers, marriage, kids, etc. This is the story of two unlikely friends and their friendship that spans well over 30+ years. It showcases the ups and downs they are faced with and the consequences of selfishness and bad decisions. Most importantly, it shows the amazing power of what it means to have a friend at your side during the good times and the bad times. I found this to be not only about friendship, but also about husbands and wives, mothers and daughters. I was on such an emotional ride from beginning to end. I loved all the fun, pop culture references - the music, fashion and clothes. I was hooked from the start and had a tough time putting it down. Keep a box of tissues handy - I was sobbing at the end and it was 2am by the time I finished it, but it was definitely worth the ride. This is the first book I read by Kristin Hannah and, needless to say, I am already searching for another one. This is chick lit at it’s best. I highly recommend it!

I can't read this. Mcmurty writes beautifully; so slow in places you can feel the Texas heat yourself. I put it down halfway through because I am just so sick of the way women are treated in many of the books I've read lately (see also George RR Martin). I don't care that (if?) it's realistic and an accurate portrayal of the times. I just can't keep reading books where abuse and rape are glossed over and even glorified.

It took me awhile to figure out if I really liked this novel..because it's one of those stories with no definite conclusion. When Angelica turns four, it seems as if something or someone is sexually attacking her and her mother, Constance. Is it a malicious spirit, as Constance suspects, hence her hiring of a spiritualist? Or is the father, Joseph, a sexual predator? Or could Constance be seeing "ghosts" from her childhood and is transfering those fears onto her daughter? Or is she just suffering from womanly "hysteria" as suspected by Joseph. By the end of the novel, which is narrated by the adult Angelica, the answer still is not clear, which seems to be the whole point of the book. How does one's childhood memories affect their adult life? How much should one believe certain memories or were they just put there by the suggestions of others?
The characters weren't interesting or even likeable. And the plot didn't really go anywhere.
It was interesting to see the story from the point of view of the witch. Other than that I wasn't impressed with this book. I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend this book to some of my friends. There was way too much focus on sex, almost to the point of obsession on the part of the writer. I know some of my more innocent friends would be appalled and disturbed by it. It was too much for me, in fact.

I have to give it five stars for the subplotting alone. If you want to learn how to do that, you should really read this book.

This book helpfully reminded me that it is socially unacceptable to cry on San Francisco public transit. I’m actually a bit surprised about my 4-star rating, because I really didn’t like this book at first. The style felt grating for the first 100 pages or so, but that shakes out in Part 3 with the arrival of Max. After that, the story finally grabs hold and the reader is fully let into the rising and falling anxiety and constant pain of all the characters, major and minor, as they suffer through the home front of a horrific war. I don’t usually respond well to interminably depressing books, but that’s because they often have interminably depressing characters that I find it hard to care about. That is not the case here--these characters squeeze their way out through the letters on the page, crawl up your arms, float through your eyes, and settle into your brain where they sit quietly and exude their humanity.

This book is great if you like to ponder yourself (who doesn't?) and your motivations. It made me think a lot about the things that make me feel good or mad or guilty, and whether maybe some of that is not as universal as I thought. It was both freeing and challenging.
