Loved it! These books have all the traditional themes that are wonderful to revisit as adults-good versus evil, appearance vs. reality, love and hate, sacrifice, friendship, family. This book especially is my favorite of the series (still waiting for book 7)!

After reading the whole Percy Jackson series of books and enjoying them tremendously, I decided to buy this book by Rick Riordan just a few weeks after it came out, and boy was I impressed! This book is different because new characters are introduced, the main one being Jason and his two other teammates Piper and Leo, who have numerous adventures and death-defying cliff-hangers throughout the book. In this book Percy Jackson is never seen, but he's still important because he's missing and is being searched for by all of his friends from the earlier series. This book has a very interesting twist in how Jason and Percy are connected. Great adventure reading that also educates about history for either a kid or an adult! I am really looking forward to reading the second book in the series, "The Son of Neptune" coming out in the fall 2011!

I haven't yet finished the book, but I'm ready to get it over with. I pretty much know how it's going to go, anyway. I wanted to like this book because I am a fan of the Pants series. This, however, was disappointing. The beginning was extremely slow, but I thought I'd give it a fair shake and push through. I should have known. First, let me say something positive: what I like about Brashare's style is that she doesn't fall back upon cliched metaphors & figurative language. She very well could - but she usually surprises you with a unique & unusual comparison which captures her meaning more clearly. Bravo to her for coming up with unique imagery. Now for the rest. Possible spoilers. I guessed the general idea of the plotline when Riley complained of a sore throat (Jim Henson came to mind). And, sure enough, I was right. But through the remaining journey, I was only frustrated by the ignorance of the characters. I have very little patience for characters who inflict self-torture because they refuse to tell the truth to loved ones. No sympathy for your stupidity. Additionally, Riley seems unbelievably selfish. She has quite a few people who care about her and love her, yet she chooses the road to destruction merely because she doesn't like being sick & mothered. She doesn't like being cooped up in a hospital (who does??) so she takes risks with her health and puts her life in jeopardy, all the while her family despairs because someone they love is recklessly choosing death, heedless of their love & devotion. Selfish, immature girl. When I wasn't angry at Riley, I was rolling my eyes at Paul's waxing poetic...strike that, waxing broody. And when Paul wasn't annoying me, I wanted to shake Alice, who was an annoying cliche: so beautiful - but she doesn't know it- in love with Childhood Friend Mr. Hunky-Hunk-Tortured-Rich-Boy, who she is meant to Save! I wondered sometimes if the relationship was born of an old fantasy by Ms. Brashares, who wanted to write a book she could live through vicariously. Problem was, she didn't really have a plot once the couple gets together, so she just slapped something together & called it a book. Overall, I was severely disappointed in this book. Many others seemed to like it, and it wasn't a hard read. But I would definitely recommend the Pants series - even to adults - before I would recommend this.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well I liked this retailing of Beauty and the Beast. It was fun to have it modernized. It was a fun quick read and enjoyable! I really fell for the beast too! My heart went out to him when he had to make some tough decisions. This is one of those stories that helps remind you to not judge others lest you be judged or walk a mile in their shoes first. maybe two swear words I wouldn't let my teenage read this,is not a clean romance for that age.

Dickens had been writing serialised novels for thirty years when OMF was first published. It shows a maturity in its style and complexity with a much darker humour than (e.g.) the Pickwick Papers. The plot is like the Thames, a constant theme throughout the novel. The characters, their foibles and stupidities are the real relish of this book. It is difficult to know whether he is observing with fondess or satirical sharpness the struggles of the nouveaux riches to establish themselves in Victorian society. I would love to think that Nicodemus Boffin was the model for Discworld's harry King, which would Pratchett even funnier.
bored by it.

A truly lovely book for Dutchies and expats. If you are an expat in Holland and would love to know a little bit about our weird culture: Do read it! Some things seem exaggerated, but it does give you a good view of our lovely little country. For the Dutchies: Gewoon met een korreltje zout nemen en genieten van het boek. Het is hilarisch als je je ineens beseft hoeveel soorten manieren van doortrekken onze toiletten hebben!

Very enjoyable story about teen twins in over the top, impossible situations, but definitely very fun to read.
