I was excited to read this book since it had so much "buzz" surrounding it. While it was fine and read quickly, I found myself wondering "who cares?" None of the characters were particularly likeable and the plot wasn't very interesting.

Prior to reading this book I had read Ice and The Lost by Durst and enjoyed them both. Durst has been an author that I always enjoy, but I never think her books are absolutely amazing. This book was similar to the others I have read in that aspect. I enjoyed it and thought it was well written. This was a quick and fun read, that was a bit different from other YA paranormal stories out there. Pearl is a sixteen year old vampire, she’s vicious, full of herself, and sees humans as less than...well...human. That is until she is stabbed through the heart by a Unicorn, her first thought is, “where the hell did a unicorn come from” then she passes out. When she wakes up amidst her vampire family she discovers something crazy; she can walk in the sun. Her family quickly takes advantage of this and assigns her the task of luring humans to the King of New England’s Feast. As part of the plan Pearl is supposed to go to High School...seriously. Things are going pretty well until Pearl realizes that being stabbed by the unicorn changed her in more ways than the obvious. I know the premise sounds a bit goofy and this is definitely a more light-hearted read. There is quite a bit of humor, but it also ends up being a sort of coming of age story for Pearl. Beneath all the silliness there is a solid discussion about people becoming who they want to be and not what their family tries to force them to be. There’s also an underlying theme of forgiveness. I was kind of surprised that such a solid heartfelt message was delivered in a story with such a goofy premise. Pearl definitely changes drastically over the course of the novel. Her growth and change is really what propels the story. This is definitely a “high school” paranormal book. Pearl spends a lot of time in high school and some of that is spent learning to quickly navigate the social waters there. Pearl is incredibly smart and fun to read about. I also enjoyed some of the side characters; both the ones she meets in high school and the ones in her vampire family. Overall this was a fun and light paranormal read. It’s a unique premise and it worked well for this story. The story is funny and ironic, while still being heartfelt and engaging. I really enjoyed it and I would recommend to those looking for a light YA paranormal read.

Continuing my attempt to catch up on all of the Star Trek books I've bought but haven't gotten around to yet, just finished Chrysalyis. The basic premise is that Voyager is low on food and stops at a very earth-like planet to scrounge for some food. An away team beams down to the lush gardens riddled with ancient ruins after scanning the planet and finding no life--at least not what we expect as life. There is some kind of energy reading that comes across as a life-force, but it permeates the entire planet and wreaks havoc with Federation technology. Once they've beamed down, the locals make themselves known but seem very friendly. But then a member of the away team collapses for no apparent reason and things start to go wrong from there. Overall, the book was OK. The beginning was a little slow, and there was far too much time spent on repeating things we already knew and expounding on some philisophical ideas. Also, some "insights" into the characters were thrown in here and there and really didn't have anything to do with the main plot and didn't spring from that main plot much either. Character development should come FROM the plot, not just be thrown in for filler, and that's what these felt like. Initially, I was ready to write this one off completely about halfway through. But the real heart of the novel doesn't come until toward the end of the book, and it's much more of an idea than it is anything about Voyager or its crew. The central idea could have been set in nearly any other SF&F universe, not just Star Trek. But the idea was good enough to elevate this book above a write-off. I won't spoil the idea here, but know that the book doesn't really become interesting until the last half/third of the novel.

I'm really enjoying this Jackson Brodie mystery. I think it's as good as "Case Histories."

Ten Little Indians by Sherman Alexie is not your typical pow-wow Indian imagery, it contains some of the most attractive nine short stories that I have ever read. Alexie uses humor to attack the social issues that Native Americans have to deal with everyday living in the United States. He also uses some of the most unique characteristics in his short stores, here Native Americans vary from homeless Native Americans to the most successful traveling business man with a perfect family. Sherman Alexie also mentions 9/11 in many of his short stories, even though much of the setting takes place in Seattle, 9/11 is represented especially in one of my favorite short stories called Can I Get A Witness? In this short story we are introduced to a wife and mother of two. She is sitting in a restaurant daydreaming about the mystery of her waiter and why he has not given back her credit card back, then a man enters with a bomb around his chest and the woman looks at him with a smile in her face, the complete opposite of what one would do in this situation. As the story continues we come to the conclusion that the woman had always wanted to be in this type of situation to escape her life and fake her death. she mentioned how her husband and children hated her, and found death to be the only solution. I am very glad that Mary put this book in the table because it is a book that does not allow you to keep your eyes off of it. i recommend this book to those who might not really like short stories or those who do, this book will change your perception of short stories because it did for me. I am looking forward to read more of his books.
I keep this book out and read the different Gateways over and over. "How good can you stand it today?" ~Millman

I really don’t know anything about poker, but I was keen to read this after realising just how fabulous Ms Coren is. Although it is all about the game, it’s not hard to read. Even when going into details about particular hands, you only have to have a basic grasp of deal, raise, and fold, which is the extent of my knowledge. It’s a tale of how one person can do what they love and do it well, and a chronicle of how poker has grown and changed but still retains it’s essence. The most important lines in the book circle around: “It’s not about the money.” (As an aside, this is the first proper fail I’ve experienced via ebook. There’s a great bit at the end where the rules of several poker variants are explained, along with a glossary that would have been very useful had I know it was there before. I went through the entire book not knowing what a flop was.) One of my favourite things about the book is the style. Written in the first person, but also in the present tense, it’s unusual and very engaging. The short sections make it easy to get into and to come back to, and the nicknames also help keep all the many different players clear in your head. Highly recommended, as it’s a great story which tugs at the heart-strings, but also a refreshing approach to life.

I keep this thing on the shelf by my pillow to pick up whenever I feel like getting a good dose of erudition. I don't think I'll ever get through all of these essays, I'll just pick one at random and read for a few pages. Montaigne tends to jump to three or four subjects within the course of one essay and ending up somewhere completely different than where he started, so it's not like you miss anything by opening it at random. Who knew that the father of the essay was such a rambling, non-linear thinker?
What a great book. This book tells the reader that art is all perspective. You get a tour through the Museum of Modern Art and then in the end they have an "All about the art" section. It takes each piece of art shown in the book and tells the specs.
This is a well-written, powerful piece of historical fiction. I felt the prose was really beautiful and found my heart hurting on more than one occasion. But then--I also laughed out loud a few times, so an overall GREAT book.
