This is about as contrived as Heyer's plots ever are: one of those plots which could easily have been solved if the people involved ever actually sat down and talked to one another. I caught myself rolling my eyes at several points. This wasn't helped by the fact that this is so much more a romance than it is a comedy; I have always found the less palatable elements of Heyer's work considerably sweetened by a good dash of comedy. I wasn't overly fond of Arabella, but Beaumaris was entertaining enough, especially since he was both thoroughly aware of his own flaws, and thoroughly unconcerned by them. One of the better ones, but not a favourite.

Interesting story but not one that I just couldn't put down or anything.
Definitely one of the classics of this genre of historical adventure writing. It's a quick book to read - 300 pages long in my paperback copy, but it feels much shorter because Forrester's pace simply zips along. Hornblower is a lot more of a repressed prat than he is in the movie miniseries, but I was expecting that from what I'd been told. It has to be said, however, that it is one of the most homoerotic novels I have ever read, and that Bush is so obviously in love with Horatio that I wonder to god how no one ever picked up on it. *boggles a little* I don't think it's a patch on O' Brian, but still a classic and definitely worth the read.
My favorite non-fiction book of all time. Want to chat about the fall of Easter Island? Love it!
This book was a little slow to read, but really well written (in my opinion). The characters were interesting enough to keep me wanting to know more about them and what happens to them in the book. The story is about a Scottish family, told primarily from the perspective of the dad and the eldest son. They are complex and different characters the story is told through their perspective of how they deal with the rest of the family and the things that happen within the family. The dad is a pretty steady guy but then does something totally out of character and likes it. The son is gay and lives in NYC. He's always really awkward around his family b/c of his choice to live in America and his orientation. The author gets you to delve into each of these characters to figure out what makes them tick. However, by the end of the book,I still felt like there as a lot about them I still didn't really know. Nevertheless, I'd recommend it.

Great advice for people who are on the road to success. There are turns, twists and bumps in the road and Bishop Jakes makes you think about how you'll handle them. One important lesson I learned from this...success is a lonely place. Everybody can't go.

** spoiler alert ** Read this for our bookclub and based on a friend's suggestion. I found the author's style to be very smooth and he did a wonderful job transitioning the different periods and characters in the story. I also found the characters to be well developed and fairly reasonable. A few issues: Genet becoming a revolutionary was a bit over the top. I also did not like when the Shiva/Marion characters merge at near the end of the work. All and all, worth the time it takes to read it.

More Arturo Bandini goodness. It's not a stale story, it remains fresh and good. I liked it very much.
mind Gripping...!
