"The God Virus" by JE Murphy is an incredibly interesting and rather surreal science fiction/fantasy novel that explores a world turned upside down due to a very miraculous virus. The story begins with a man named Judeus finding a strange woman washed up on the beach who he later finds out is called Miranda. When he attempts to use mouth to mouth to revive her he becomes infected with a virus which in the future would become known as the Miranda Virus. This virus is unlike any other and it begins to affect every living creature on Earth, including humans, animals and even plants. As the virus encounters different creatures it takes elements of their DNA and begins to infect other creatures with the DNA it has previously taken. Before long, there are people with bird's beaks, dogs that can talk and Miranda herself who appears to be able to change her entire body shape like some sort of sea sponge. When the highly religious Judeus persuades Miranda to journey to Rome to meet the Pope in the hope of getting a marriage blessing, a madcap adventure beings which really explores the insanity that has embraced the planet. However, during their journey they discover that a cure has been created in Rome that could kill everything on the planet and they realise there is more at risk than their own wedded bliss. Therefore together with an army of mutated humans and animals they march upon the last bastion of the supposedly uninfected, Vatican City itself. The synopsis of the book I have detailed above probably doesn't do the surreal elements enough justice. To put it simply, I think that Murphy is giving Terry Pratchett a run for his money in the insanity stakes with this story. I really did smile throughout as I watched the virus create what at times was some quite humorous havoc across the planet. The rather surreal environment did result in a world that seems a little bit too basic and simple for me but I just suspended my disbelief and tried to enjoy the adventure. The book isn't all about surreal humour and strange events however and I found there was a good mix hidden within the meat of the story. The elements of adventure and action are well supported by some rather interesting theological discussions between the characters. This is mainly due to Judeus and Miranda come from opposing view points: one is a scientist whilst the other is highly religious. The book uses this to explore the clash between religion and science and highlights that sometimes these two are not as mutually exclusive as some people believe. The biggest weakness in the story for me was in regards to the way in which the virus affected Judeus and Miranda. It more or less enabled them to become superhuman which made it a little bit too easy for them to overcome some of the various problems they faced. It doesn't really detract from the story but it would have been nicer to see some difficulty in the way they had to face adversity. Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable novel that is full of humour adventure, philosophy and action aplenty which should keep most people entertained. I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a good post-apocalyptic read, especially those who are after something a little bit different to what you normally see in that genre.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not a deep book, but very enjoyable. Heard they are making a movie. I think I should learn how to knit.

beautiful, magical, sad funny happy, confusing! loved it to bits.
I had to skip most of the chaper that told the tale of "the incident" I just couldn't stomach it. So detailed and real. So far the rest of the story is very readable - I'm worried about it being too depressing - but based on the recommendations - I"m hoping for the happy ending. Finished reading - and I just clicked on Chris Bohajalian to check out some details about her - and WOW - it's not a her it's a HIM! THAT is the most surprising thing about the book. I was sure that I was reading from a woman's perspective - I'm glad that I didn't know that it was a man - I think I'm always cynical when i read a woman's story that was written by a man. Rule #1 of writing - isn't it write about what you know? Anyway - I really enjoyed the book - although I did have to skip a good chunk - it was just too much for me to stomach. And I'm all for homebirth - I find it interesting that the only negative review I read was written by someone who is very anti-homebirth.
Cute, charming, endearing. Memoir of a NYC temp who decides to cook all the recipes in Julia Child's Master the Art of French Cooking (can't figure out how to underline here) in one year. The book is interspersed with excerpts from Julia Child's husbands letters and Julie's blog. Light, entertaining, and true to life!
It didn't live up to its hype.

liked the movie so much better. in the book scarlett is a B & i'm glad she's alone & poor at the end. in the movie, at least she has redeeming qualities like being fiercely protective of her family. i had no sympathy for her in the book.

A weighty fantasy book from a very good writer--it is clear he takes the task up seriously and isn't just marking off another genre to conquer. Life on Clam Island in the Puget Sound is wet, rural, and built around baseball--their field lies in a spot on the island where it never rains, until one afternoon. Ethan Feld has moved here with his dad--maker of dirigibles--after his mother has died of cancer. He doesn't want to play baseball because he is no good at it, but Jennifer T. Rideout--a local girl of Indian descent--won't let him quit. The field never experiences rain because of fairies: ferishers, as they are called here, who are small, baseball-loving creatures who resemble native peoples. Coyote--a more malevolent trouble-maker in this tale who wants to unmake the four worlds--has split the world of Clam Island from the neighboring world (causing the rain) and his minions have killed or captured all the ferishers save for thier chief. Ethan and J.T. are soon off to the other worlds, along with Thor--a boy who thinks he is an android--to stop Coyote and save Ethan's father. A delightful adventure that I liked a lot--and I don't like baseball at all!
