Very touching, light read, love story. Some elements appeared forced. But I am very much interested to see how things will (or won't) work out for Amelia and Joshua... It seems very ill fated, either way you look at it. She's dead!

I really wish I hadn't let this book sit on my shelf for as long as it did - it was absolutely wonderful!
I understand how one might enjoy this book, but I found it to be a little fluffy. The entire book read like an introductory chapter and aside from being heartwarming, I did not take much away. An easy read but in general, meatless. And this is coming from a vegetarian!!

This book was definitely more bloody and gory than anything I normally read, but the concept was so intriguing that I couldn't put it down; I had to see how it would end.

I learned about God & America & how democratic capitalism fulfills the Abrahamic ethic to love one's neighbor as oneself.

** spoiler alert ** I am baffled that this book was chosen as one of the top 5 fiction books of last year by the times. I liked the ending of the book and much of it came together at the end, but generally i found the book disjointed and uninteresting. It was also the third book in a row I've read with nauseatingly PC privileged white folks (This Beautiful Life and Freedom being the other two) so time to change themes. Spoiler: the plot with the faux Brazilian boyfriend was random and made little sense but I really liked the ending with the phone call from the husband. The email from her brother that she never returned before he died was over the top. Moore should have scaled back so many divergent plot lines.

The biography of a girl who is chosen to go live with her brother in the states while the rest of her family stays in war torn Cambodia. Chapters alternate between her life in the US and her family's life in Asia. I loved this book.

I loved the cover of this book!!!!! That's what made me want to read it in the first place. And then that it took place on Cape Hatteras, well its just a given that it will be a great book right? WRONG. I really wanted to love this story as much as I loved the cover, but it was slow and boring and just not going anywhere for me. Towards the middle it did slightly pick up, but not fast enough. Even though last half was much much better than the first half, it still seemed to move in slow motion for me. I was happy enough with the way it ended, I like my happy endings! My favorite lines from the book - "I think about how God must rate our success and decide it has to be on much different terms. Jesus choose twelve disciples to hang out with, and had they lived today, I don't think any of their names would appear in Fortune 500 magazine" All in all - not a bad book, just not one of my favorites.
