Richard J. Evans’ In Defence of History is an attack on the influence of postmodernism on the practice of history. What makes it interesting is that in this case the attack is coming from the Left. What makes it even more interesting is that Evans is not even particularly hostile to postmodernism. His argument is that although postmodernism can offer the historian some useful insights and techniques there is a very real danger of throwing away the baby with the bath water. If historians abandon the time-honoured techniques of placing their reliance on primary sources and the belief that history is about something real, that the past can be (at least partially) recovered, then they will be left with nothing. Taken to excess, postmodernist history can end up being not merely nothing but a mix subjectivity and wishful thinking, it can also open the door to some very serious dangers indeed. By rejecting the idea of objective truth postmodernism opens tremendous opportunities for extremists such as Holocaust deniers. If history can become whatever your own political leanings and subjective feelings want it to be there is no longer any valid reason for opposing the works of people like David Irving. The most horrifying example he gives is a feminist history of witchcraft that treats all sources, including explicitly fictional sources, as being equally valid. His criticism in this case is especially telling since Evans himself is extremely pro-feminist. When it was published several years ago it attracted a predictable firestorm of criticism in spite of the fact that Evans goes to extraordinary lengths to moderate his attacks on postmodernism. It seems that postmodernists believe that all texts should be regarded with scepticism, apart from their own! A highly stimulating book, recommended for anyone who is unconvinced by the Brave New world of postmodernism.

This was an interesting book and look into the orthodox Jewish community through the eyes of its women. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I did. It was well written and interesting. It was interesting to see some of the parallels between women I know and these Jewish women -- the gossip, friendships, etc.

I am about half way through. Interesting setting-the suburbs of CA during a wild fir. Good character development.

Robert is leaving on a train to London and finds himself in the company of a strange woman all dressed in white who entertains the boy with spooky stories. Being the final part of a series of books by Chris Priestley for young readers, that are absolutely enjoyable at every age, this book features once again a wide array of scary stories. The narrative has lost none of its captivating power and once again it is intricately written, letting the the authors love for storytelling shine through. This time around the connection between the child and the one to tell the stories is even a tad more gripping, especially when you realize who the white woman must be. I absolutely love the nod to the previous books, and how certain details of those are mentioned or even explained in this book. In fact, I recommend reading all three in a row, to get the full effect of the skillfully interwoven details. If I were asked to compare the book I'd say it's like Edgar Allen Poe for kids. In short: A hauntingly good read!
I could really relate to this touching story that shows the personal conflict of people who leave home to make a new life in another country. This shows how one may always yearn for one of their two countries. I think that my grandparents always thought of Poland as home, even though they spent most of their lives here, happily. I especially enjoyed how Say juxtaposes pictures to contrast the features and cultures of the U.S. and Japan and how the images carry the theme of family heritage & following in the footsteps of your grandparents.

Barbara Vine is Ruth Rendell writing very British but very contemporary mystery stories. She's no George Pelecanos -- it's a whole different culture but the characters range from working class to aristocracy (and cabinet secretary). I liked reading a story set in familiar parts of London and a story with a political theme (not the central theme, though). It's really about secrets and who they harm but also how innocent acts have profound repercussions over time. Clear, straightforward writing; strong characters, most viewed sympathetically; sometimes hard to put down.

The content is fascinating - a translation of the rules for the correct conduct for a warrior living in Japan in the late-seventeenth century. But the style of the translation was very America, and a bit too modern for the subject matter.

While the plot of this book has several interesting characters and settings, it is intended to be great for those who do not pay attention to detail the first time. If you ever forget the major plot points or wish to hear a storyline told over and over from several perspectives, this is the book for you! I enjoyed the overarching message and the depth of most characters - I just hated the repetition and the use of idioms like they were goin outta style! For example, "one after another" is probably used 416 times in this book, as is "again and again" along with "(s)he thought back on that snowy night as if it were all happening again". I mean, come on people - I am a good listener (ok, I listened to it on CD) - hit me with the main points and let's move on together!

It is delightful. McCall Smith is just a good, good author.
I read this book a few years ago and I highly recommend it to horror readers. The citizens of a small town can't wait to attend the freakshow, but they have no idea they're going to be the acts. No one is safe as the freaks in the travelling show surround the town and proceed to go door to door slaughtering men, women, and children, or forcing them to participate in their bloody carnival. Admittance will only cost you one finger. Disturbing images, a claustrophibic vibe, and a wicked woman ringleader make this a must-read novel.
