Okay, this is not a good book. It is not even a "good" book. Howard Hunt spent much of his life writing pulp thrillers, and it shows. The rest of his time, however, was spent in the OSS, the CIA, and Nixon's plumbers. He was a lifelong cold-warrior and this autobiography--Bay of Pigs, pre-Mao China, Guatemala, Watergate, Kennedy assassination, G. Gordon Liddy, William F. Buckley--may as well have been subtitled "disasters in American foreign (and domestic) policy." (I am not a Kennedy assassination enthusiast, but if you are, you will no doubt wish to get all Talmudic on its ass.) Look, I'm not saying everything in this book is true. Presumably most of it is not, but that is, of course, part of the fun. The other, perhaps larger part is Hunt himself. He does his sanctimonious, self-aggrandizing, faux modest best to paint himself the tragic hero, but as you might expect from a Watergate burglar, he's not half as clever as he thinks. Shades of the real Hunt, his tunnel-vision and contempt for democracy, appear throughout.

Jim Elliott was an amazing man of God, and any book about his life is inevitably challenging in a spiritual sense. I found, however, that this particular book was otherwise a little dry. It was more the story of his inner spiritual growth rather than his actual life, although obviously the two are intertwined. I think also, upon reading this book, that I was mildly disillusioned about Jim Elliott, because he came across as a somewhat arrogant argumentative person that I probably would not be good friends with were I to meet him.

This is my introduction to reading Palahniuk, other than watching Fight Club 30 or so times. It's what I expected; satire, twists after twists, crazy storyline. Jump to me trying to figure out who's who...or who's what...or who he/she is or was. I'm still confused with their really being only like 4 main characters, but each of them with different names and genders and all intertwined constantly. I was expecting a big twist at the end and still was surprised how it all turned out. I think this is definetly a book that you have to finish in order to fully enjoy. To get the big picture. Jump to me cracking up at the mom and dad waiting for their hate crimes. Seriously funny stuff. Jump to a "shout out" mention of the south hill, page 79, My Hood. Jump to my future, definately reading more of Palahniuk.
