A guilty pleasure. It did convince me that America most likely dropped a German atomic device weapon on Japan.

The reason I am drawn to literature, to art, to books considered to be classics, is to watch some middle-aged, bearded man put on a pair of (excuse the flamboyant analogy) skates and suddenly pitch himself into the center of the ring and pull off a triple Salchow. I love risk-taking, experimental literature. With 'The French Lieutenant's Woman', Fowles is boldly moving in a lot of directions at once (pushing down fourth walls [Chapter 13], jumping forward and backward in time, throwing himself into the path of the protagonist Charles) and manages to control it all with a sharp elegance that is breathtaking. He (re)creates a Victorian period novel and then deconstructs, dissects and parodies it while we watch. He bends into it elements of Darwinian and Marxist thought (two revolutionary Men who lived during this period, but are never displayed in the works of the Brontës, Hardy, Gaskell, Dickens or Trollope. Doing so, he subverts both the age and the novel. 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' is a work of genius and a book that teased and challenged me on almost every page as I read it.

Absolutely adorable. A fantastic book book with Zen tales for children. Stillwater tells tales that are simple yet still thought provoking. The first tale is of Stillwater's uncle who likes to give gifts to the people he loves for his own birthday. He is so giving that one day a robber comes to his house while Stillwater's uncle is home. The uncle welcomes the robber and because he does not like to let anyone leave empty handed he takes his only possession, the rob he is wearing, and gives it to the robber who leaves uncomfortable by the uncle's generosity. Little tales such as these are good for young children. While the audiobook was delightful to listen to having the illustrated book would be best. The illustrations are very cute.

"'I just don't understand what you were doing with me,' I said. 'I mean ever. Sometimes I try to see this all from your perspective, and none of it makes sense. You come into the room and you're drunk and maybe you knew I'd had a big crush on you or maybe is was just random. And I'm this dorky girl but I cooperate. I melt at the slightest touch. So we fool around, whatever. But then you come back. That's what I don't get. God forbid you ever talk to me at dinner, but you keep coming back for the whole year.'" The reviews on this book seemed terribly mixed- some people believing that it is just drippy teenage angst, others that it is an easy comparison to their own lives. At first I was inclined towards the first group; afterall, I had lived these experiences and in that sense they didn't seem outstanding or unique. I began to turn when reading about her relationship with Cross, a guy who seems all to familiar. Too close to home. In that sense I realized that this is a hitting insight into a terribly neurotic female mind.

I heard about this book before the movie came out and loved every minute of reading it. I was royally pissed after watching the movie (I could tell from the get-go that it was something I wouldn't like, but after months of fighting it I figured I'd never get it out of my system if I didn't just watch it and get it over with), especially since the novel was so nicely written. Of course, I have to keep in mind that this is a somewhat romanticized point of view of a cultural phenomenon, and therefore doesn't describe a typical version of the phenomenon, but it still makes a powerful statement and was a joy to read.
Tyler captures the shift in the life of a late middle aged man with her usual wit and compassion for "lesser" among us. A quick and heart-warming read.

An interesting premise, but I found some parts of the story slightly disturbing and the ending anti-climatic. The writing was engaging and while it held my interest, all the way to the end I kept waiting for something to happen but nothing ever did.

Frightening in content, impressive in the detailed research. This non-fiction book reads like a thriller.
