If I had read and/or liked the original, I think I would have enjoyed this. But ugh, I couldn't get more than 50 pages in.

It's not really the book's fault. But it's full of sweaters knit in pieces. I think this has more value for me as a color/texture/button idea book than following these particular patterns. I just can't face seaming another sweater together any time soon.

It's been a while since I've read a Wharton novel, but this made me want to make a stack of all the others I haven't read (along with those I have) and stay put for the summer, polishing them off one by one. When I read "The Emperor's Children" in summer '05, I immediately felt that Messud had to have studied (and loved) Wharton's manner of observing the worlds of New York society. "The Custom of the Country" is a biting, brilliant book of the social aspirations of one Undine Spragg of Apex, NY. Paris Hilton would be smart to get the cliff notes for this one. As I read the novel, I was continually surprised by how contemporary it felt. Not only by the writing, but also at how things really have not changed. There will always be people with their sights on the next best thing and the best way to go about attaining it. A fascinating commentary on the United States at that point in its history (Undine Spragg = US) and an all-out scathing read.

This was a well researched and compelling take on the story of the first white woman who crossed the Continental Divide, based on a true story- Hedlund adds dramatic flair and her own twists to what must of been a terrifying and harrowing journey. She also takes the cheese out of convenience marriage stories and riddles it with stolen glances, passionate thoughts and simple progression. Towards the end of the story there was so much tension and sexual attraction going on that I wanted to jump in the book and drag both of them into a bedroom and lock the door. Mostly due to the fact that Eli and Priscilla were each sharing their secrets with us- the readers- but they were keeping everything from each other, making the romance development frustrating, sometimes its a hard place to know where the story is going, but waiting for the characters to catch up. Each obstacle the couple faced made them stronger, yet by the end I wanted the trials to be over, for me as the reader, it was a tad annoying to see a few life/faith lessons on pride play against main character Eli, it was also hard to suspend belief on the ending scenarios, as I thought the story ended a few chapters shy of where it did......(my patience ended with the fleas).....but ~ALAS~ dear readers.......this is fiction and our characters needed time to come to the logical conclusion of their feelings for one another. Jody has a great style of her own, bringing intense passion to her writing, always taking her readers on an emotional journey of nail biting suspense to see how far she will go. Despite my mixed feelings with the ending, I thought Eli and Priscilla's story was rich in historical detail, visual imagery and had a lot of heart.....

This book has received so many excellent reviews, that I'm not really going to add much. First, who can resist a swashbuckling vampire? Yes - that was swashbuckling. I know I can't. This book really does have it all...vampires, princesses, bloody battles, quick getaways, romance, honor-bound duty, magic....the list could go on and on. I adored Gareth and hated Flay and Cesare. I rooted for Adele and felt slimy reading about Clark. The main relationship in this book is a beautiful one. I really can't do it justice. I am immediately beginning Rift Walker and can't wait to see what happens next. Quotes I loved: "'On the contrary, I've never seen a human perform so well against vampires.' 'You think so?' 'Yes. Your decapitation with a saber was amazing.'" "It would have been hilarious except for the fact that she was pondering the joke while standing in a chilled vampire prison wearing filthy clothes and eating horse." "That was all he wished. To find her safe and keep her safe. She could not survive alone. He must not fail her." "Adele kissed his head softly, resting her cheek against him, relishing the relief she felt at his words." "'I wish we had more time.....' His voice trailed off. He brushed his lips over her cheeks. 'I'll never forget you. Promise you'll never forget me.'"
